I'm ashamed to say that I don't read the major/minor prophets in the OT or the book of Revelation like I'd like to because I just don't understand it. There's so much imagery and symbolism.

Can anyone recommend for me any books or study guides/aides from reputable Bible scholars that I can use to assist me in better understanding these portions of the Bible?

Thanks in advance.

you could try http://gracethrufaith.com/, there are some excellent articles concerning end times prophecies there. And there is a place that you can ask questions and he will answer you.

J. Vernon McGee has taught straight through scripture for many years. He teaches it in a straight forward manner. The website is www.ttb.org (http://www.ttb.org) You can also hear his program on podcast, or find in on a local station. You can purchase his lessons in book form on his website as well. I bought a few of his small booklets. They are affordable and excellent.

He passed away in 1988, btw.

I know Hal Lindsey (hallindsey.org) has an entire series on CD devoted to this and he has great links to other sites regarding prophecy that can help you with revelation. My pastor (David Menard) has the revelation series on audio for free at horizon.org. However there are a few chapters that never made it to the list (bummer). Sorry, I don't know how to create the links. I've tried but it doesn't seem to work.

But here's what is really important! I am going through Todd Friel's DVD on hermeneutics called Herman Who. It is available through livingwaters.com. It's only $20 and well worth it. Hermeneutics is the art and science of interpreting scripture. I wish I had done this years ago! It's teaching me how to rightly divide the word of truth. He goes through 5 steps to interpreting scripture:
1) Grasp the text as it was written to the original audience.
2) What are the differences between the biblical audience and us?
3) What are the theological principles we are to learn from the text?
4) Does the NT change our understanding of an OT text?
5) How do we apply the theological principles today?
He actually talks about Revelation and all of the symbolism in it.

For the book of Revelation I would suggest "Footsteps of the Messiah" by Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum.

Revelation: Four Views: A Parallel Commentary by Steve Gregg

Very un-biased and fair presntation of all four (five?) views on Revelation and the three main views of the Millenium.

Ditto on JVM
I have several of his study books on different books of the Bible, each were about $8 and are straight forward and full of insight. A good study habit is to take your bible and read a chapter then take the study book and read his overview, also look up any other scriptures referenced in the study in your bible to familarize yourself with connection scriptures from different books of the bible.
