I need some clarification before I answer the poll. I don't know what some of the categories are. For instance, what is "classical" when referring to Christian music? Plus, I like some contemporary Christian but I don't know where it falls in the poll selections ie some of Selah, Watermark, Michael Smith and what is called Maranatha. What would those be??

Tenn, Classical music would be Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, etc. Many of these composers either were Christians or wrote their music in praise of the Lord.

As for the contemporary music you described, that would be Christian Contemporary (Pop/R&B) in my poll. That is the category for pretty much ANY Christian Contemporary that isn't Christian "rock". Since you had some further specifics which go beyond what my poll describes, then just describe those specifics here in comments (as you did). Hope that helped! :)

I like vertical music. While the hymns are nice-and I enjoy them too-they do not really bring my heart into praise like the contempory stuff does. I think it has to do with the fact that most hymns are horizontal-in other words, speaking to man-but much of the contemporary stuff is speaking to God-and God inhabits the praises of His people.

There is so much good stuff to choose from, it's amazing that we end up with so many bad selections.

We can choose anything from Bach to Michael Pretorius to Pachabel to Handel to Charles Wesley to Fanny Lee Crosby to Amy Grant......

And what do we get? I don't have the heart right now to repeat what all the previous postees have written.

That's one reason we joined a liturgical church, they actually use the Hymnal! And many of the hymns are oriented upwards, to praise the Lord!

Hallelujah!

What does Hillsong United count as? Rock or Contemporary?

BTW, Hillsong United is AWESOME!!! Great music and great, anointed lyrics. :)

Why go to a place if there is no Life and Power there? If it is just a dead religious ritual of church service, it is pointless. I mean, are people getting set free from bondage and are people operating in the gifts of the Spirit? Are people freely and joyously praising God? If not, I wouldn't be caught dead there, UNLESS I was called by God there to do a work to fight the darkness in the place and help them overcome the religious bondages

Charles Wesley to Fanny Lee Crosby. What great writers. I love the stories behind some of the old hymns. I love the old hymns and what I call soft contemporary. I'm not into the loud, driving contemporary. I love "Wonderful, Merciful Savior" by Selah.

JohnnyHye, thanks for answering my question. You probably thought that was a dumb question about "classical" :lol2 but I thought you were talking about some new kind of Christian music :lol2.:doh

[despite my attraction to more contemporary music]

Ideally, for a worship service, I would prefer an eclectic mix of acoustic, folk-based, contemporary songs and more traditional liturgical music such as Gregorian chants and antiphonal psalms.

... and if the service can be held in a church that actually looks like a church rather than an office building, all the better.

I prefer some of the hymns in church, like Be Thou My Vision, And Can It Be?, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Oh The Deep Deep Love Of Jesus, This Is My Father's World, etc.

You should have had a mixture as a choice. I think most people like a variety of songs and styles.

I agree with all those that said some hymns, some contemporary, some rock, etc.

A couple of old time hymns (Good doctrine)
a couple of contemporary
a few praise Worship (vineyard style)

This is what we have... not so many hymns, many times they are redone. We went to a church that was all about the best music. I love my Christian rock but during worship I felt like I was at a concert. The church we are at now is a nice balance
