Starting on the 6th of this month (August), my city (Bridgeport, CT) will be practicing Mass Casualty Decontamination Procedures for a week. The VP of the bank of work for announced it through an email that she sent to all the employees. She also said that "Please do not be alarmed-this is only a drill".

At 5:00 a.m. this morning (Aug. 8th), a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) was simulated on the ferry coming into the Bridgeport Port. It was performed by the Bridgeport Fire Department and the Connecticut National Guard.

The VP of People's United Bank made sure to announce that to all employees so that everyone was aware of what was going on and so that no one would think it was a real scenario.

My first thought to this was that we must be getting closer to an imminent attack on the USA. Has anything like this happened to anyone in their hometown?? :scratch

This sure isn't my gramma's world. Come to think of it, it isn't even the world I knew as a little girl.
And we can never go back.

Very well said and I'm only 31!!!!

Your words made me think of something kind of cute but also sort of sad that happened about five years ago when my daughter was 8 years old.

I was trying to explain to her why she couldn't just walk down to the store and get ice cream as I was able to do when I was her age. She thought that most unfair. I tried several ways to explain the dangers lurking out there without scaring her. Finally, I began to understand myself just how much things had really changed.

I thought back to those carefree innocent days and realized just how much freedom we really did have. We could go downtown by ourselves at 12 years old and no one batted an eyelash! We could ride the city bus alone at 8 or 9 to go swimming! If you got lost, as happened to my cousin, the bus driver would just pin a note to you telling your Mom to make sure you knew the bus routes better!
We could go to the parks and hang out til 9 and no one worried! We could climb the dirt hills at the construction sites and no one checked up on us every ten minutes. We could be gone all day in the summer and only show up at home when we got hungry!

All these memories came back in a rush of nostalgia and sadness that my kids would never know these simple joys.

Finally, I said to her, "I guess I grew up on a different planet, a totally alien world to you!" and she said, "It sure sounds like a fairy tale world Mom."

I guess that makes me somewhat sad, and more lonely than ever for heaven.

Sad, huh?

I can remember when I was 9 years old my two brothers ~ 5 and 7 ~ and I went trick or treating by ourselves!! Could you imagine allowing a child to do that today? I don't even let mine leave the yard by themselves in the middle of the day. And even then I have every blind in the house up so that I can watch them!!

Forbygrace, you brought back a lot of memories. It was so wonderful to be able to stay out and about from dawn to dusk. Those days were so carefree by comparison. And what a relief for parents, back then, to be able to open the door and let the kids run without too much worry!!!

That's right. I long to live in Mayberry! Or where ever 'Leave it To Beaver' lived!
