It should scare anyone. The James Madison quote she ends with is why.

"The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands ... is the definition of tyranny."
Doesn't that one quote sum it up now?

.

The Bush Administration has made sure that the Patriot Act has never been challenged in court, Ripped. It's never been "upheld" by any court.
hmmm wonder why they have seen to it that it has never been challenged. Wonder what's in there that we the people have missed.

I don't agree exactly with everything Wolf says, and the process itself is at varying degrees of implementation, but the long and the short of it is yes, I am trying to tell you that. There are examples given for each of the ten steps, and I think they speak for themselves.

With regard to item Nos. 2 and 10, earlier this month the White House released a document "National Continuity Policy". Some political moderates and progressives have expressed concern and even alarm at portions of the content, i.e. in the case of “any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government function”, (this alludes to any catastrophic event, not specifically terrorism, folks) the president has granted himself authority to control the entire U.S. government, not only the federal branch. The National Continuity Policy also contains this yikes!-inducing reference: "classified continuity annexes."

I'm no leagal eagle. I've read and reread the document and much of it is pretty much Greek to me. But I've come away wondering if it hasn't unlocked, if not flung wide open, the doors to:

10. Suspend the rule of law; and,
2. Create a gulag.

And No. 4, we've got already. No. 9 has been suggested by numerous members of this administration, talk radio personalities and certain talking heads on the cable newschannel broadcasts.

No. 5. Yep. Including Christian church members who have organized or participated in peaceful protest against the Iraq war.

And excuse me, but where was the press on May 9 when this document was released by the White House? <crickets>
Why did I have to read about it from an international press outlet? And political conservatives - hello? How are they going to feel about this directive should a candidate they did not vote in become our next president?

Lady Liberty is so not herself these days.

Sorry for double-posting. Also I meant to say 'executive branch', not federal.
