Pope Benedict’s Outrageous Announcement

At a time when Roman Catholics ought to join the 21st century, the pontiff has declared that he is the head of the only true church. :shocked
Give me a break.

As one who has tried to build bridges between Protestants and Roman Catholics, I cringed last week when Pope Benedict XVI released his shocking statement on “Catholic Identity.” In clear, non-negotiable and jaw-dropping terms, the pontiff stated that (1) only Catholics are true Christians; (2) other Christian denominations are “not true churches”; and (3) all non-Catholics lack the “means of salvation.” :twitch

Boom! Just like that, Benedict blew up every ecumenical bridge that has been built since the reforms of the Second Vatican Council of the 1960s.

With all respect to the most revered religious leader in the world, I think someone needs to wake up the pope and remind him—and the rest of the guys hibernating inside the Vatican—that we are living in the year 2007. His Excellency’s announcement sounded more like a press release from the 11th century.

“It is incredibly sad that Vatican leaders are so blind to what God has been doing outside of their isolated little world.”

The communiqué, released on July 10, was written in Italian. Given its medieval tone, you might have expected it to be handwritten on parchment in Latin. (Which, by the way, is the dead language Pope Benedict thinks all Catholics should still use during worship.)

It has been almost 500 years since Martin Luther first nailed his 95 theses on the Wittenburg door and ignited the Protestant Reformation. From that point the Holy Spirit’s river began to flow in so many new directions—gushing over the restrictive walls of the Catholic system and spilling into the nations of the world.

Today hundreds of millions of people have found salvation through the preaching of the gospel through non-Catholic churches: Lutheran, Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Pentecostal—you name it. All churches that proclaim faith in the resurrected Christ are part of the universal church that the Son of God purchased with His blood.:ring

It is incredibly sad that Vatican leaders are so blind to what God has been doing outside their isolated little world for so many years. It is even sadder that Pope Benedict thinks that by issuing an edict from his office in Italy he can transport us into the past.

I know most Protestants probably just rolled their eyes when they heard about the pope’s announcement. Catholics who have been worshiping with Protestant Christians for years were probably also confused by it. Catholic charismatics, who have enjoyed fellowship with Protestants in recent years and experienced renewed faith and the power of the Holy Spirit, have now been told to break ties to those people since they are not true Christians.

I certainly don’t have an audience the size of the pope’s, but I can’t stay silent when he is promoting such a serious heresy. There are three simple truths from the Word of God that we must proclaim in order to set the record straight:

1. The church is composed of all born-again believers in Jesus Christ. The church is not a human institution. Though we may organize ourselves into denominations, we enjoy a mystical unity with all true Christians—regardless of our labels, ethnic backgrounds, pet doctrines or ecclesiastical traditions. The bond of the Holy Spirit makes true worshipers of Jesus into one big family. :ghug

2. No denomination can claim exclusive control of God’s truth. One definition of a cult is a sectarian group that claims it is the only way to heaven or salvation. But Catholics are not the only denominational group that has fallen into the heresy of spiritual elitism.

The Church of Christ, an American denomination formed in the 1800s, has often taught its members that they are the only true believers. And there are many so-called Oneness Pentecostals who believe that only those who are baptized according to their “Jesus only” formula are true Christians. These people are actually spreading error that is rooted in the worst form of Pharisaical pride.:ohno

3. Jesus is still praying for the unity of the universal church. He asked in John 17 that the Father would make His followers one. He was not praying that we would all join the same denomination, submit to the same pope or agree on every minor point of doctrine. His goal is that one day we will drop our selfish pride, competition and religious agendas so that we can cooperate across denominational lines to build His kingdom.

Unfortunately Pope Benedict has made it clear that he does not share these biblical values. He has sinned against Christ by dishonoring a majority of Christians. And by claiming to be the only true church he has placed Catholicism in the cult category.

Catholics who love Jesus :fish more than they love the pope and their religious tradition should swiftly denounce his error.

Great Post LisaAnne,

I do not know which part of your post makes the most sense.....it ALL does.

I particularly liked.....

I could be wrong...but, having the "Higher Ups" in the RCC give alot of "Jibberish" about the History of the RCC, using Latin in the Masses, etc.... It's all to (IMO) overwhelm their membes into just BLINDLY believing all this Rheteroic.....without asking any questions...NOR looking into the Bible for answers. They (The RCC) feels like if they can keep their followers in the Dark, they will be so confused ...they won't ask questions of their "LEADER".

What I do not understand is....if RCC members claim they are saved.....(and I believe few are, BUT some are I realize)....WHY won't they speak up? Why do they trust man before God's Word? And why do they put their trust in a HUMAN BEING that DID NOT die for our sins???????

And why would anyone trust someone that CLAIMS to be "Jesus Vicar"? How dare him use the name , and reference any clloseness to our Lord and Savior. I do not understand it, I never will. It is not religious pride coming from me...just a sincere frustration that the Pope is listened to more that God's Written Word.

Well, I can understand your concern and I share it.
But in fact, this is nothing new really. The Roman Catholic Church has and does consider itself the only true church for centuries.
It's one of the main reasons it is so very difficult to witness to catholics. They truly don't understand.

This pope is trying to use old fashioned fear to worry the everyday catholic into not straying away any more than they already have from the traditions and laws of the Roman Church.

Now there is (I speak only of american catholics, thus from my experience only) that hard core -I call them rabid catholics- who follow each and every church law to the letter. They are thrilled that this pope is coming down hard. They want the return of the Latin Rite. They truely believe that this is what Jesus wanted when , as they will put it, He founded the Catholic Church on the day He called on "Peter" to be the rock. Everything else is but a poor imitation or second rate cousin at best. They are the minority of American Roman Catholics. Are they saved? Not my call, but I suspect they will be surprized at how much didn't matter when they are at the Judgement Seat. May God have mercy on them, for they are not of the deceivers, and no one can say that they are lukewarm.

At the other end, there is the different kind of catholic who has sought out that which is missing in the rcc. They listened to the Holy Spirit who led them to a whole world of inspiration and Jesus. Some will leave the rcc; some stay while rejecting some doctrine. These are the people who are saved. And it is these folks I think the vatican types are most afraid of. They are no longer under the chains of papal authority and may lead other catholics out of their grasp. So they will use fear - obey or hell. And it isn't working.

In the great big middle , here is where you find the lukewarm church. They barely know that the pope has issued a paper.. Hey, they do their required 45 minutes on Sunday and they are out of there. Nary a thought to God otherwise. They sin and don't confess either to God directly, or to a priest. They are counting on purgatory to cover all that. They have not the single clue that anything that is so deeply discussed here concerning the legitimacy
of the RCC even is a issue. YOU know far more than they know, if they wanted to know, which they don't. Now these types exist in all churches, not just in the RCC. Are they saved? Well, they believe in Jesus as Messiah, but I fear it ain't enough, sorry folks.

The only thing I would say is this about this third group: they may well be going to hell, but it is their own fault. Do not blame the RCC. These people have their full minds, free will, and could live their lives differently if they chose too. But they are way too busy, or lazy, or uncaring to take the time to really know Jesus. And Jesus is not all that hard to find or know.

Very well said, Doxiemom. I really hope things change rapidly for the ones that are lost in all this. I pray that my family wakes up.....I pray always for the Holy Spirit to Minister their heart. They have left their First Love, and not even sure some of them, ever met Jesus at all. But, they go to Mass. :pray

I think a lot of Catholics, particularly the older ones, are afraid to leave the RCC. I know my grandmother was! She would try to talk to me about Mary and I would explain why I don't pray to Mary -- anytime I started to make a point she would say "You're not going to change me!" But before she died I did get her to read the Bible. I know she believed in Jesus.

My father in-law is also a Catholic and he had a fit when my husband started to date me, a little protestant girl. But through the years he has really grown to like me...I think I may have helped change some of his harsh opinions about protestants. But it sure is hard to witness to someone like him. In his day stepping into a protestant church was sin and as we all know if they miss mass they're told they'll go to hell.

In the end, my friend, all we can do is plant the seeds and walk away. I pray that it is these seeds which we plant will take root and be remembered if indeed they live long enough to see us all taken up and they are left behind. Pray that they have the strenght and the courage to be brave enough in the sight of the weapon that will come for their heads and not reject Him.

This is indeed a sad time. But one can rejoice in the fact that there are some priests, while I may disagree with them on certain doctrines, that are such men of God that they do stir up the desires of the souls of those who are willing to listen. These men will never be brought into the walls of the Vatican, thank you Jesus for that.

My mom was raised Catholic and when she married my dad (who is a protestant) they would have a lot of disagreements. Finally my dad realized that in order for my mom to change it would take the Holy Spirit. So that is what he prayed for....that's exactly what happened too. She started to feel a desire to read the Bible and she did. One day she was watching Billy Graham and he said something about not being afraid to be a Christian, even if your parents believe differently..something to that effect. Well it was just what she needed to hear and her eyes were open and she was not afraid to tell her parents she wasn't Catholic anymore.

I say that to encourage those of you who may have friends or family in the RCC who may not be saved and need to have their eyes opened.

I prayed the same way for my husband and he is no longer Catholic either.
