Hi, I'm Doug; I'm been a member over at millenniumweekend.org for quite a while, but never really looked into these forums.
Truthfully, I get too addicted to such boards if I try to spend too long on them, so i won't be here much, I don't think. I won't be here for sure for a while because I'm going down to Chattanooga for a week-long module course on Sunday the 12th. But, this does give me one more place to get and give prayer requests, and to read about interesting things going on. Because the media blasts so much bad news at us, and so much biased stuff, I'd much rather get my news anywhere else than TV.
I'm giong into the ministry in around a year, and leaving the practice of law for good. No, I am not leaving a lucrative law practice, that would imply that I had money, which i don't :-) But, God has blessed me, and really helped me learn to rely on Him during this decade and a year or two. I was on my own the whole time; and couldn't even afford a secretary!
Did I mention my vision is 20/800? That means if you've got 20/20, what you see at 800 feet I have to be 20 feet to see. If you're *not* 20/20, you'll have to do some math, I'm afraid. :-)
I was saved in college after getting a Gideon's New testament and reading voraciously; i've always read a lot. I don't remember really understanding He died for me and that I needed to receive Him till then; before it was just head knowledge. God knew this would be best, because I have a tendency to follow others' leads a lot, so it would have been easy for me to just follow a preacher and do stuff because he said. In fact, I didn't get baptized till a few years after claw school because I had learned to be mroe careful and was making sure that baptism after salvation wasn't just something that was being taught by this denomination; I needed to make sure I felt the Lord leading me to do it.
It's possible that I have a slight touch of Asperger's Syndrome, which would further explain that. I can't read social cues really well, and I've been told most people with visual and hearing handicaps like mine can do that better than I can. Also, I tend to be quite literal at times.
i won't get into all the specifics of why I think I might have a hint of it, but suffice to say, I find it truly amazing that God made me a new creature - and that He can do that with anyone. I have always been amazed by His creative power. And, somehow, He is going to use me to help Him somewhere, just as I've volunteered in a number of ministries in my church for over a decade.
It would be an overwhelming task if i didn't know I had Him on my side. But, I believe what He says in His word, that we can do all things through Christ.
