Why do people still do this? I don't understand it. I know someone who attends a church like this. She thinks if its in the Bible, than its perfectly fine to practice it. Was the use of speaking in tounges before Christ came? Why did the practice stop?

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Jesus had said if there was anyone speaking in tongues, that there also had to be someone there to interpret what that person was saying (something like that!). Which makes sense I guess...what good does it do to speak in tongues but nobody knows what your saying??? Can someone verify this?

In chapter 14 of I Corinthians KJV Paul instructs the believers in Corinth about tongues. He uses 2 forms of the noun "tongues". He uses it in the singular form "tongue" and in the plural form "tongues". In the singular form Paul is referring to the gibberish of the counterfeit pagan estatic speech. The singular is used because gibberish can't be plural; there are not various kinds of non-language. The Bible records no incident of any believer ever speaking to God in any other than normal human language.

Here's a link to a recent thread where tongues was discussed.

I sing or speak in tongues, usually when I'm praying alone, not all that often, but sometimes.

Just before I was 20, I went to a highly charismatic church for about a year or so. During a home Bible study I was pulled aside by some elders and "coaxed" into speaking jibberish, and they called that the baptism of the HS. I didn't know much about it so just took it as truth. But that was the only time I spoke it because it did not seem right. Now I know it wasn't right. If somebody has to loosen you up to get the HS into you.... :faint silly, silly, silly. But when you just start out there's so much to learn and you never would think all of these nice Christian people would lead you astray. Thank God for His Word, and discernment as we grow. :thumb
It is a very abused teaching.

I know there are a few Perry Stone fans here, But I would
rather point out the obvious, then see a new believer be tricked by the W.O.F ers.
Perry is a W.O.F er. His latetst is his work on inspiration today. CREDIT CARD charging a love gifts on a certain HOLY feast days will give you a 3 fold return.
Come on, stop supporting these goofballs. They have done enough damage.

Sometimes we have to pick and choose our battles.
This is not one worth fighting really.
If you go out on the street and mention his name. No one knows who he is unless they are into christian tv, books and tapes.
