Preacher sues '20/20,' alleging defamation

By Alana Semuels
Times Staff Writer

July 25, 2007

The Rev. Frederick K.C. Price may have two Bentleys, but a spokesman for his 22,000-member church says his Palos Verdes house doesn't boast 25 rooms and he definitely doesn't own a helicopter. A lawsuit Price filed Tuesday claims that ABC's "20/20" defamed him when it suggested otherwise, portraying him as a "hypocrite and thief" who financed an extravagant lifestyle with church funds.

Price, founder of the Crenshaw Christian Center, was featured in a "20/20" segment about well-heeled televangelists titled "Enough!" that the suit says "devastated, embarrassed and greatly humiliated" the 75-year-old. The suit also names Walt Disney Co., which owns ABC, and "20/20" co-anchor John Stossel.

In the March 23 segment, "20/20" ran a clip from a sermon Price delivered 10 years ago and displayed a still photo of the preacher as Stossel interviewed an activist who keeps tabs on how ministries spend congregants' donations. The suit calls the use of the clip "one of the most outrageous instances of 'out of context' editing in the history of television."

In the clip, Price declares, "I live in a 25-room mansion, I have my own $6-million yacht, I have my own private jet and I have my own helicopter and I have seven luxury automobiles."

You'll have to go the LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/la-fi-price25jul25,0,5818739,print.story?coll=la-default-underdog) to read the rest :)

In Fred's defense, why doesn't 20/20 report on the salary and possessions of Jack Welch or Bill Gates or Warren Buffet? :scratch

Now with that said, I too get a little tired of the prosperity gurus naming and claiming it all over the place, but to access their books or tapes or CDs you need to send a "love" offering.

And oh yes!! Credit cards are accepted.

How much does a man need. How many homeless does Fred feed or shelter and how much does he give to the needy in his congregation.

Oh, I forgot. If they are not prosperous, its because they lack the faith to make it happen. :doh

Doesn't the Bible say for a christian not to sue his brother?

How much does Freddy want, and will he have enough faith to win against the machine. :hehee

yeh... that one's my favorite "teaching" of theirs [/sarcasm]

for all you non-WOFers: a "teaching" is a doctrine -- same word in the Greek; WOF distains "doctrine" 'cuz it "divides" (yeah, Truth from error); so they come up with their own spurious "teachings" which are, of course, false doctrine

Good for Fred! 2020 mis quoted him. He does not own those things. I will have to side with my brother in Christ on this one.

The salaries of Fred, as well as most televangelists, are paid by donations which they solicit from their viewing audience, while the salaries of Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, etc. are earned through their investments, entrepreneurial endeavors, etc. When someone is asking for donations for the purpose of spreading the gospel, then use that money to live a lavish lifestyle, it doesn't sit well with a lot of people, especially when there are many, many people on fixed incomes who regularly donate money to gospel programs, at the urging of televangelists.

I was disappointed to read that 20/20 used Fred's words out of context. It was deceptive, and I think we all expect better than that from 20/20 since they have done many shows exposing the deception of others.

Most of these types of secular programs like 2020 have an ax to grind when it comes to christain ministers. Most of the ministers they attack have a fixed salery from their ministry. They do have side ventures that bring in money also. as far as I am concerned, they deserve all they get. Who else is working to bring in so many souls into Gods Kingdom? Is this not the single most important job on this planet?

Rom 10:14 (http://www.blueletterbible.org/cgi-bin/popup.pl?book=Rom&chapter=10&verse=14&version=kjv#14)¶How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
