oh yes, I forgot :heythere...we put in a small Jotul (used and refurbished) woodstove. We can heat the whole house and also cook on top. Plus, coffee...lots of coffee put away, instant and ground. I cannot live with out my coffee :hehee....also don't forget candles and matches.

I know little about survivalism(correct term?;) and am learning more now, but I do know that coffee is great to barter, at least from what I've read from previous crisis' in history. People will trade alot of food for a can of coffee.

This sounds silly, but believe me it worked. Soak kitchen towels in ice water, if ice is available and roll them up and put them around your neck. Cools you off a lot; I've read somewhere that it cools the blood going to your brain...

Nicely done. Yes, a cool towel on your neck and under your armpits will rapidly cool you down. Conversely if you're cold, warm packs under your arms, around your neck and in your groin will also quickly warm you.

What about amoxicillin?
How long does it last?
Anyone know?

RRuth - isn't it amazing how timely our Lord is to remind us of things we need to be addressing!? Glad it wasn't too serious for you and that it prompted you to get with the plan :hug

My uncle is a Registered Nurse and he has been taking the Pet Antibiotics for years. Amoxacillian is commonly available at pet stores for fish tanks. We always have farm grade Antibiotics around for the critters.

Very interesting. What is the difference between antibiotics for people and antibiotics for animals? Do they work the same? Would there be any concerns to be aware of for people using animal antibiotics? What others are there besides Amoxacillian? How about difference in pricing? Cheaper, I am assuming. Lots of questions......sorry.

We do the same thing. We live on a farm and are able to get large quantities of amoxacillian. MUCH cheaper than getting 'people' meds and it is the same dang thing! :ohno

Okay, I am sold! Been doing a little research since I first read about this. Are there recommended places you can suggest for getting them and places you would suggest they not be bought at? I saw them on Amazon, but was wondering if they were as safe as buying it online as it would be from a vet or store.

Has anyone had any experience with or information on Clarithromycin (generic for Biaxin) or Zithromax for animals? Or about Fish Mycin (Erythromycin)?

Ruth, this is a fantastic reference on the shelf life of foods. Let me know what you think of it:

http://www.waltonfeed.com/grain/faqs/index.html

Here is the part of the link that deals with common packaged & canned goods: http://www.waltonfeed.com/grain/faqs/vc.html

Hello,

The first link you provided won't go through.

I was hoping to find information on SHELF LIFE of items that are labeled as EXPIRED. I'm hoping to stock and save food items for YEARS, not 6-months at a time. Also, since I'm cleaning out my pantry and cabinets, I don't want to be wasting/tossing "expired" food that I can REALLY keep around longer.

For example, I ALMOST tossed out my new bottle of Helms Mayo. It expired in 2005, but someone here posted that it could last for YEARS.

Thanks for any information!

Ruth
