Jill,

Like the other parents, I am a big supporter of hs. I 4 children, two which I hs.

Last year my 2nd grade was struggling and was behind in school. I done everything the school told me to do, including getting a diagnoses. School wouldn't help even though testing showed her very behind in the reading, writing category. I cried and prayed for days. One morning I woke up and realized I could home school her and how to do it. Keep in mind hs wasn't something I even seriously thought about. Praise God, she is doing soooo much better now.

Now we are hs the 6th grader. She was on the honor roll and all that jazz in public school however I moved her back a grade because she wasn't capable of doing the work. I am sooo mad at the ps but I won't get into that.

:hug

Keeping praying, God will answer:pray he did us.

As for keeping her on track, a lot of hs deal with this. For us, we praise her, we do sticker charts for everything so when she achieves a certain goal.
Last year I done the play money thing and she would earn money (change in the beginning) for positive behavior, focusing and trying the best she could. At the end of the week she would have to count her money and buy things from the toy/candy store) She is awesome at counting money now. When she did have negative problems I would take 5 cents away each time. At the end of the week she would get paid and then pay me back. She quickly realized I meant business and she done a lot better.

God will let you know, I was very scared in the beginning for many reasons, he carried us through it.

God does not always call the qualified but he qualifies the called.

God will help you though all our insecurities. Also it's not only the children who learn but the parents them selves.

ICAM!!!!!!!! We have been HSing for 7 years this year.. It's definitely been an adventure, but God has been with us the whole way!:yay

I remember hearing a lady on Focus on the Family say "Not everyone is called to hs, but everyone is called to consider it and give it a try." Preschool is a great time to start because the curriculum is easy :lol2 and the students are pretty forgiving. I started my oldest in preschool and we were pretty inconsistent and I really didn't have a clue what I was doing. She's in 4th grade now and we learned together.

Read through a lot of the threads on here about HSing, esp the one about any negatives to HSing. I honestly can't think of any legitimate negatives. But there are many to public school. Sometimes I get tempted to put my two oldest in PS just to make it easier on my self (which is a lie in and of itself) and then I realize this is my children's lives I'm talking about. It's not worth taking the easy way out.

Keeping my oldest one focused long enough to get through her work is an issue for our family. But, that is an advantage of HSing, I can structure the day and the curriculum around her learning style and attention span. At one point a few years ago my goal was just to get her to sit still long enough to do one row of math problems. Then we worked up to two rows. And so on. That worked much better than dealing with the tears and feelings of incompetence on both sides when she was faced with doing a whole page at once. Now she sits and does a whole lesson with no problems.

I love HSing so I could probably write forever, but you're probably losing interest, so I'll stop. :hehee
