For the last year and a half, I have been learning to knit. Just recently, I have been taking a sock knitting class. Does anyone have experience in knitting socks? I would like to know which sock knitting technique (4 needles, circs, etc.) you have found to be most helpful.
(Funmudder, I would enjoy hearing from you)

Me too! I've gotten a some VERY neat books:Sensational Knitted Socks AND More Sensational Knitted Socks by Chrlene Schurch and Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles by Cat Bordhi. I haven't gotten too far with it all yet either...have had a couple of "false starts" with the circulars; made mistakes I couldn't fix so I'd rip it out and start over. I like the feel of the circulars, though.

I've made several scarves and a couple of simple hats and now want more of a challenge...I think I found it!!:lol2

Thanks, Abigail, for your reply. I've ordered the Socks Soar book, too, though it hasn't yet arrived. Got to finish a sweater for gr'son anyway, then poncho for his older sister. Maybe, just maybe, I can get back to socks by January. They are fun! What else have you knitted?

Pretty much just the scarves; a simple rectangular shawl; a baby blanket, a couple of caps; I'd use a novelty yarn of some type that provided the "style" factor so I could zone out with just straight garter stitch. I've gotten bored with that, so I wanted to try something more challenging that didn't cost the earth in yarn! I liked the idea of a smaller project like socks where you can splurge on top quality yarn since you just need a couple of skeins for the most part. With all the work that goes into these projects, I can't see using inferior materials.

By the way, while I do like the Socks Soar book, the other two I mentioned have much more to offer in the way of charts to figure out custom sizes, and tons of ideas to basically design your own socks.

I've never taken lessons; just used books. I think maybe that's my problem; the books make a lot of assumptions when they give directions sometimes. With this kind of thing, I guess I'm a visual learner and need lots of good pictures. My local knitting shop does have an "sit and knit" area that I could go to work through a problem if need be, too.

There is a neat sock pattern at Bev's Country Cottage website called, Bev's Quick Knit 2 Needle Socks. www.bevscountrycottage.com/kp2.html It's not complicated like the usual sock patterns, because it's 'sewn up' after the knitting is completed. I laughingly call it a 'sock wannabe'. :lol2 I have made a pair of these, and they work up much more quickly than the 'real' sock patterns. It's a good & quick way to get a pair of socks on the needles and off again without all the hassle of dp needles or circulars that require turning the heel, making a gusset, etc. They look better when knitted in stockinette rather than simple knit stitch, (after doing the usual ribbing for cuff, of course)

i wish i could knit... i can crochet a little, but for me i learn and then forget so quickly

i knew how to knit once, when i was around 10

my biggest problem is keeping track of counting stitches, even with a clicker counter thingie i lose track

i have a manual knit machine but i need it to be setup somewhere i can have it all the time so i can go back to it whenever i can and not have to take it apart over and over. but i don't have an extra room to do this.

i need a craft room.....lol

Oh good googley moogley a knitting thread *swoon* be still my clicking needles.....

Socks, oh how I love to knit thee.....

I started my sock learning process early on. My galpal (who had harassed me into learning to begin with) was always doing them and I didn't know that it wasn't normal to jump right into sockie goodness when learning to knit. :heh

I started with 4 needles to hold the stitches and a 5th to 'work' with. Cuff first, spiraling my way down. I taught myself using this (http://www.royea.net/sock.html) printed out. I made libral use of calling the galpal who got me into this when I came across things I did not understand.

Now I am completely sold out on toe up (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html) socks :yay
I love that I can try them onto peoples feet as I knit to ensure that perfect fit. I either made em too long or just short enough in the foot to make them uncomfortable :doh :lol2

Right now I'm knitting my winter cardigan. My first Fair Isle project. Philosophers Wool (http://www.philosopherswool.com/Pages/NightSkyGNP.htm) has a tape/dvd that shows how to knit colorwork and it's just as easy as one string when you follow their technique :nod:hehee
As an interesting side note, my hubbo and kids swear that gal in the picture is me, so it was a no brainer to get that kit since we already knew what it would look like on me :lol

We move out of town tomorrow, I'll be offline indefinately. I'm so sorry I'll be missing out on this threads growth :pout
