Love those spots!
We're still dual-booting on the computers at the house... Linux on the primary, with XP as secondary. Still have a few win32 programs we like (mostly games). Once they are no longer in use, Linux all the way! :)

hehe, yea linux minus the "Novell". Bet they wouldn't want to talk about that. :aha Bout like religion.
It is nice not to be bugged with viruses and having a system so stable it can run for months without rebooting and be just as fast. The networking/firewalling is flatout lovely too. All 110% free. No bondage.
M$ supports all hardware stuff though, can be aggravating.

I'd probably start with ubuntu. Don't know how that would be starting out. The first distros I played with were mandrake and redhat.

Linux for dummies is pretty good, I have the smaller reference book of it, myself. Always worth picking up Linux Unleashed from SAMS publishing, at some point of course, that one has always been a good help. Other than that, just play around with it. Get either a Live version that boots off a CD or get something like www.damnsmalllinux.org where thay have a very stable version of Linux that will run in a regular window on the Windows platform... on XP at least, I'm not sure about Vista but it may.

Thanks. I had a web server running Ubuntu for some time; I had to drag it to school and have the computer teacher show me how to fix it.

I have a legacy computer that I was given [AMD Duron, 256M] with a freshly formatted 80Gig drive that I want to use as a Linux learning tool.
I mailordered a CD of Kubuntu 7.04 Disc 1-Install/Live CD [<$5 from OSDisc.com (http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/index.html)]
. . . but I can't figure out how to get it installed.
Someone please shine some light into the thick darkness that surrounds me!

When you boot off the disc to a desktop, isn't there an Install icon on the desktop?
There was the last time I looked, but I wasn't interested in installing, so I never clicked.

I have done a system restore several times on other computers [virus, HD crash], but when I power up this computer with the CD in the drive, NOTHING happens.
I am moderately computer literate, but at a loss here.
