Blair Wants EU to Drop Constitution Name From Treaty

Prime Minister Tony Blair said he wants the name ``constitution'' to be dropped from any European Union treaty designed to speed up decision-making in the 27 nation block.

``A conventional rule-making treaty is better than a constitutional treaty, and so I would like to see a situation where, not merely the name constitutional treaty is put to one side, but where the characteristics of a constitution aren't there,'' Blair told reporters at his residence in London today.

Blair is urging the EU to break the deadlock by ditching plans for a constitution in favor of a less ambitious treaty focused on making the bloc work more effectively.
