View Full Version : What to do? Rather....how to do?

Without going into too many details, we are looking to homeschool our daughter in the very near future. This was not an immediate need until this last week, when we felt as though God gave us the green light.....and by green light, it was an answer to prayer from a few years back. You see, we wanted to homeschool her beginning in 8th grade, but her Dad put in a massive roadblock, and his family threatened us with legal action if we tried. Anyhow, conversations have taken place just in this last week, and we were unshackled from the constraints they put us under, and now they are practically begging us to homeschool her. I prayed that God would soften their hearts towards her needs and not so much their wants......and He did!

Unfortunately for us, we live in CA.....and you have to fill out an affidavit to homeschool no later than October 15th. I know that God is going to make a way, because He is so faithful. Ladies (or gents) what would you suggest we do? She needs more of a cherry picked curriculum like we did for our son, because we know her specific needs and no one curriculum provider fits them, so we cannot go through the schools, or a charter that requires you use xyz materials.

Can I file as a private school? Or is that wrong with just one child? Also, are there different rules for high schoolers? Our son will be home schooled again beginning next year, which was already planned. We did not anticipate this answer to prayer with our daughter, but since it is here, we are acting on it. We need to make sure this is all set up correctly.

Advice?

Hi, Mary! :wave

Congratulations in embarking on your homeschool journey! And what a wonderful answer to prayer as far as your husband and extended family coming around! :thumb

The first thing I would do is contact HSLDA and find out the exact laws of your state. It is so different from state to state. It would seem that surely there is some way to withdraw a child from school in the middle of the year, even in California! :lol2 But, I just don't know. HSLDA is excellent in providing you information, walking you through it, and interfacing with the school system if they give you any trouble.

God bless, and your daughter is very blessed to have a Mom that wants to disciple and teach her at home! :hug

Mary, I agree with HisJewel. Your best bet is to go to www.hslda.org and they will have all the information on homeschooling in CA. You may also contact some other homeschoolers in your area and see what they are doing. You may be able to get around the affidavit somehow.

I am a homeschool mom in Maine, teaching my 9th grade son. Public school did nothing but damage him. However, he has a 7th grade sister, successful in public school . So, two of my four children attend/attended public school, and the other two homeschool was the way to go.
It is wonderful you have taken the path to embrace your childs individual needs.
Sending :pray your way !

I agree with everyone else. When it comes to legal stuff, contact HSLDA. Are you a member? I advise getting a membership, and calling them. Or call the Calif. homeschool organization. Our Wash. Homeschool Org. is very good. You need someone who knows the rules to be able to actually talk you through this.
