NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Tsunami warning center says strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits off the Kuril Islands.

KURIL'SK, KURIL ISLANDS (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake struck off the the Kuril Islands in Russia's Sakhalin Oblast region on Saturday afternoon, seismologists said.
The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1, struck about 262 miles east-northeast from Kuril'sk on the Kuril Islands at a depth of 32.9 miles.
No tsunami warnings were issued following the earthquake.
A seismologist at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a quake of this magnitude is usually "no concern" for this particular area.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1, struck about 262 miles east-northeast from Kuril'sk on the Kuril Islands at a depth of 32.9 miles. It happened at 3.45 p.m. local time.
Based on the location and depth, there was no tsunami risk or a potential for damage.
A seismologist at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a quake of this magnitude is usually "no concern" for this particular area, which is often struck by strong earthquakes.
