I have read through Samuel but I can't recall why God was so upset with Saul and why was he rejected by God. David seemed to be the apple of God's eye inspite of his short commings. My sister asked me and I am reading it now but I want to know what you have to say.:)

Saul decided to offer a sacrifice at the battle with the Philistines in Gilgal rather than wait for Samuel to do it. Only Levites were supposed to do this, Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin.
Saul disobeyed God again when he did not destroy the Amalekites but spared the king (Agag) and saved oxen, sheep, etc.
Saul was disobedient to God.
Read 1 Sam. 13-15.

"for I know the plans I have for you" is my most favorite verse in the whole bible thank you for you reply! I have one more question why do you think that David was not rejected like Saul he was also disobedient :yay

Others may have a better answer for this... but I think it was a heart-thing.
David had a heart after the Lord's own heart. David walked "in integrity of heart" before the Lord (1 Kings 9:4). Saul just did not have the same heart for the Lord that David did. He was disobedient because he cared more about what others thought of him than what the Lord wanted from him. (1 Sam 15:24)
We're all imperfect & we all sin. But the Lord sees our hearts.
Please note that God's favor does not free us from His discipline... after David sinned with Bathsheba & killed Uriah the Hittite so he could marry her, he was punished... the baby died & David's family was a big mess...

Psalm 51 - David's repentance for the Bathsheba event. I think the best answer is in that Saul never had that "godly sorrow" which is spoken of in 2 Corinthians 7:10-11.
You could also compare Judas and Peter, both failed to obey, yet Peter had Godly sorrow and Judas was only sorry that he did it in a human, selfish way.

Saul was one who kept disobeying God's commands and making excuses. A king cannot afford to behave with such risk when the future of Israel is in his hands. Saul would have brought the nation down with his unwillingness to follow through on key elements of their security. God knew what was ahead. The nation was going to have to go through alot of challenges and Saul would have been a disaster. If you read on ahead, even David almost went down during his reign.

Man plans - God Laughs...(Psalm 2) If we could just keep people out of this stuff, they always screw it up....<grin>
Did Israel need a king? They were supposed to be ruled by God, but they wanted to be like the other nations, so God let them have Saul, then David, then etc. to show them that all men are corrupt. They should have kept God as their king. And I should quit making mistakes and being selfish....

Just to give you a little more of my interpretation
This is one of my favorite stories of the Bible. First, remember that God is omnipresent. He Knows past, present, and future. He also Knew Saul's heart. Read the story in full, and you will see a man who is internally and spiritually tortured. Why? Apparently, he had HEART issues with God. His jealously of David and his self-centeredness got in the way of what he should have been focusing on. Why do you think David was the only one who could ease Saul's torments when he would play music for him? David had authority, granted by HIS LOVE of GOD. Did Saul love the Lord like David? No. He loved himself more.
Samuel told Saul that The Lord was lifted from him as king. Did Saul step down? No. He continued as King despite being demoted by The prophet Samuel and directly opposed God's Ordained Commands.
David, although he made his mistakes, He never stopped Loving the Lord with All his Heart. He was chastized by God for setting up Bathsheeba's husband's murder. He lost Absalom over it. Still, through it all, He loved the Lord.
Another in the Bible who had immense love for God was John the Beloved, and he was the only apostle that did not die a martyr.
It all boils down to that one-on-one relationship with the Lord.
