Here we have been worried about when we would have the next 6.0; well that has just blown completely past a 6.0.
BOY, a guy takes some time away from the computer to actually have a life and when I get back I see this. I also hope it is not destructive.

Same here! Take a few minutes away and a 7.5 happens!! Oh man, I do hope this has not caused any major damage. Foxnews.com is reporting it as a 7.7, so don't know if it has downgraded since the report came out or not.

USGS initially had it at a 7.7 and then later downgraded it to a 7.5. There have been no reported casualties.

Our luck is still holding. The 7.5 in the India region today was far enough out in the ocean that it also, in spite of its magnitude, caused little or no damage beyond some frayed nerves waiting for the tsunami that didn't develop.
Other than that it was once again a fairly calm day punctuated by a single big event and a 4.3 in Nevada.
But what concerns me is the appearance of escalation in the India area magnitudes. Take a look at this data I posted on the thread for the India quake.
Here is what I found by going back in my daily updates. The newest first and oldest last.
As you can see, it is not unusual for India quakes to happen in single or double events and then nothing for a while with no prolonged string of aftershocks.
However, this latest quake is only the second of the lot to go over 6.0 and the magnitude is rising. I hope this is not a trend that is going to continue because if it is we could see an 8.0 or over in the same area within the next week or two.

Now all we need is a quick resolution to the gulf oil spill and no more Iceland volcano eruptions and things will be just fine. But I ain't holding my breath for the gulf to be resolved soon.

Two locations are sharing the code red listing today. Japan for the 6.1 quake and India for the unusual string of 6 moderate aftershocks.
It looks like things are heating up again, but they could quiet down just as fast. All we can do is speculate and wait and see if it is a trend or an anomaly.
The good news is that while we are seeing a lot of recent increase in activity the death and destruction toll remains very low.

There was one more moderate aftershock to add to the unusually large number of events following the two bigger quakes in the Nicobar/India region today.
There was another small quake in Oklahoma and a 4.7 in the Baja/SoCal area as well.
But overall it was a pretty quiet day.

UMEA, SWEDEN (BNO NEWS) -- An unusual earthquake rattled northern Sweden on Tuesday evening, seismologist said, but there were no reports of damage or casualties. It was also felt in parts of Finland.
The 4.1-magnitude earthquake at 10.30 p.m. local time (2030 UTC) was centered about 95 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Umea, a town in the country's Västerbotten province. It struck about 20 kilometers (12 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
A geophysicist at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake was unusual for the region, and said the last notable earthquake recorded by the USGS near Tuesday's epicenter was in 2001. She did not have a magnitude for that earthquake.
Before that, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale struck close to Tuesday's epicenter in 1993.
There were no reports of damage following Tuesday's earthquake, which was also felt in some parts of Finland. "I was home and surfing on the computer when I felt the earthquake. It began to rumble as when a train passes. It lasted for about 15 to 20 seconds, maybe longer," a local who lives near the epicenter told the TT news agency. "I was scared."

What area is the "code red" area today. I will give you three guesses and the first two don't count. But all the Baja/SoCal activity is masking the fact that there have been a couple of other notable increases. Both the Virgin Islands and Peurto Rico counts went up by 6 today. And we picked up a couple of new places today as well that we have not seen in this list since I have been keeping it.
But still, with all the activity there still has been little to no deaths or destruction. For that we can be thankful.
While it started out with a ton of closely spaced aftershocks following the 5.7 quake it has since quieted down considerably in the Baja/SoCal area. By tomorrow the list should be more managable. At least I hope it is since I will have to break this update into two posts to stay within the per post character limit.
