I wonder yogi, 2 questions for you...Number one, what is the name of their earthquake site? and do you think that our usgs site lowers their numbers because they know that people are looking at them and number one they don't want people to ether be afraid, or number two they don't want them to know the real truth?????:thinking I think it is both...Because I find it funny how they can have all these earthquakes and one minute they are one number then they change it, but other sites still have it listed as a higher number....
plus doesn't the numbers come strait from the actual earthquake computer reader from the ground where these quakes are at, or close to where they are at. ( I know I am not saying it, in the right terms, sorry ) :hehee :doh
Thanks!

The reason there are differences in the magnitude readings from different agencies is because each agency is responsible for their own data. The USGS is primarily for the U.S. in regards to earthquakes, and each place around the globe usually has its own, accurate agency. Japan, for example, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Let's use the 6.3-magnitude earthquake near Japan as an example. The JMA recorded this earthquake at a 6.3 because they used their local seismological sensors, they used all of their data to come up with this magnitude. The USGS detected the earthquake, but since the USGS isn't some kind of global, objective earthquake center, their magnitude-reading was different. They recorded it as a 5.9. (I think so, right?). Anyway, it seems like the USGS usually has LOWER readings on these international 'quakes as opposed to the local agency...the reason (I'm assuming) is because the USGS has fewer sensors and detectors to retrieve their data from. Basically, they have LESS data. The local agency, however (JMA), had more sensors and data to read and determine the magnitude...which means they have MORE data.
I hope that made sense...I'm not the best at explaining things. I also hope it's fairly accurate. :lol2

The USGS site was pretty reliable until about two weeks ago. Then I think the only guy in the office who knew what was going on either quit or went on vacation.
I don't think they are playing with the numbers. What is happening is that different monitoring stations use their own helicorders or seismographs.
I would think that the monitoring station at the place the earthquake happened would be able to generate more accurate data since they are closer.
I believe that the USGS is just popping off a quick estimate to get it posted but there is a whole lot of data to analyze and numbers to crunch to get a final reading. Then they upgrade or downgrade the magnitude when the have done the math.

Two areas are once again sharing the "code red" status. Both India and the Kuril Islands had quakes that started off in the USGS listing as 6.0+ events and were downgraded to under 6.0 later. But at least one, the Kuril Islands, is still over 6.0 on the station closer to the event than the USGS monitoring facilities.
Taiwan and Indonesia both had events over 5.0 today
In spite of the two high magnitude locations today the total count is still down and things look to still be calming down slowly with some spikes up briefly.

Thanks Zerozx! That made perfect sense...So the one in Japan was probably right they had a 6.3 from the JMA but from the stand point of Usgs it was a 5.9...Ether way it is still high! :lol2 :pray for these people!

The Kuril Islands is staying on the "code red" list today for recent activity as well as today's single highest magnitude event at 5.2.
Alaska continues to dominate the U S, Alaska, & Hawaii listings with 5 of today's 8 events. Puerto Rico had a moderately high increase in events but they were all at 3.6 or lower.
Several of our recent hot spots are now calming down by either disappearing from the list or having lower magnitudes and less frequent events.
