Hey girls....I'm thinking about getting a bread machine, bread is getting so expensive and I think it might be nice to have fresh stuff anyway.
Do any of you have one ?

Can you slice the bread thin enough to use for sandwiches ? Does it freeze well ?

A few years ago, I purchased a Breadman Pro for $100 from Target. We have been extremely satisfied with it. We sometimes use an electric knife to make the thinner slices for sandwiches. We've not frozen it much, because it doesn't last long enough. I went online to read reviews of bread machines before buying this one, and then made the choice. We've been very satisfied with it.
If you make whole grain breads, as you may know, you have to add Vital Wheat Gluten that is located next to the flour in the grocery. I also use a portion of white bread flour which is higher in gluten, in addition to the VWG.
I have had to experiment quite a bit and still have an occasional 'flop' which is not due to the bread machine. . .but the baker.

I had a bread machine at one time, but rarely used it. They have the mixes you can buy for bread machines, but that won't save you any money really. When you make your dough from scratch it can save you some. Ultimately I ended up giving mine away to a second hand store. I know some people that just love their machine though.:o

:hug I love my bread machine!!!:yeah I love the variety of breads I can make and the fact that I can set it up so I wake to fresh bread every morning! I dont usually freeze it as my family eats it so fast,so I dont know about that.It can be sliced thin enough for sandwiches, it depends on the recipe.:wave

Skip the BM and save up to get a kitchen aid. We use it to mix all our bread and then just plop it into the oven. I have a BM, a really good BM and I still prefer my kitchen aid and oven to it. I can do so much more without the BM.

Anyone work with sourdough? I love having it on hand and not having to worry about yeast!

Love my Kitchen Aid, too! It does a great job mixing and kneading the dough. I had a bread machine a few years ago and I was never completly satisified with it. It made the "tall" loaves, not the more traditional "long" ones. I also found that leaving it out on the counter was a pain and moving it out when I needed it was too much work. I now just leave my Kitchen Aid out, use it to mix dough as well as everything else. Plus I love having the oven on during the winter.
