View Full Version : Saddleback Church uses Miley Cyrus music as "worship" music?

Problem is a church is the last place that a message should be ambiguous and stealthy. I the church needs to marry the world to get the "message" out perhaps the message stinks. That church and the ones like them are so busy trying be relevant that they are a becoming irrelevant in an eternal sense.
Due reverence must, at all times, be given to Jesus and then let Him deal with hearts. Instead of making Him the afterthought He needs to be the Star of that show. That silliness leaves no room for The Holy Spirit to move in hearts since there is no meat upon which to chew.
I look back on the days of the Jesus movement and the message of the worship was spot on and unlike saddleback the message was every bit as impactful as the worship. People were being saved without the need to compromise in the music or the message. One thing for sure, God has not changed since then, so that only leaves one answer. :candle
:amen Well said, OWL.

Yes.
Going to church should be about *God*, not about *us*.
God is the main attraction, not music, not the sermon, not the drama, not the people.
God.
We shouldn't feel like we have to "make God more attractive" to get people to come.
Imagine having to invite the Jonas Brothers to play at a concert venue, in order to get people to come and see ELVIS. Either people loved Elvis, or they didn't. They wouldn't be persuaded to love Elvis just because the Jonas Brothers played before he took the stage.
I don't understand or agree with this whole business of offering something worldly to get people in the door to meet God. Either they want to meet him, or they don't. :scratch

Miley Cyrus claims to be a Christian, and has previously publicly expressed her faith in Jesus Christ. The recent "lesbian kiss" is not a good reflection on that faith though. I noticed the lyrics don't have God in them, but they don't have profane material either.
I can see where they are trying to reach a certain audience, young kids. I might not like that the music contains nothing about God, but I'm not totally against providing things that might attract youth. Years ago I taught kids in Sunday School, and I always stopped at Dunkin Donuts and had donuts in my class room. I had a lot of kids from the neighborhood, whose parents didn't attend church, coming to my Sunday School class because of the donuts. But because other teachers didn't like that other kids that I wasn't teaching would come to my class and get donuts they banned donuts in the class room. Go figure.
My point is, some things might be harmless and actually work for good.
I noticed the lyrics do mention abouit moving a mountain, which is a Christian theme, that if we have faith we can move mountains (do great things).
I have to disagree with a couple of points here. First of all, the attitude that some things might be harmless and actually work for good is exactly how a little leaven sneaks in. Before you know it, other things that "might be harmless and work for good" are sneaking in and the truth is being left out. The apostasy is becoming so prevalent in this last days that it makes my head spin. The churches that are prone to these kinds of attitudes and practices are the same ones that in most cases are giving a watered-down version of the gospel, it they give even that much. It's not about sitting around a campfire, playing pattycake and singing Kumbya. These churches are giving the lost exactly what they want ~ a feel-good, your okay, I'm okay, the whole world's okay, kind of gospel without ever touching on the real issue ~ confession of sins, redemption throught the shed Blood of Jesus and salvation. These churches feel that we must not offend with the truth; therefore, we must conform to the world and not conform the world to Godly living.
I think its appalling that secular music is being used in praise and worship services. There is nothing about this Miley Cyrus song that glorifies God, Jesus, the Cross, His Blood, the Holy Spirit ~ nothing. It's all about me, me, me, I, I, I. Miley Cyrus is someone that young girls look up to and lately she's been showing a side to her that speaks anything but being a Christian. I'm not going to judge her heart. She's young and perhaps thinks that she can call herself a Christian and act the way she does. I just hope that she doesn't go down the same road as so many others before her.
As far as the lyrics mentioning moving a mountain, unless you are grounded in the Word, you aren't going to know that this is a Christian theme, and the way churches are going these days, the chances are that those who don't know aren't going to be taught that; and if they are, it's going to be taught in a worldly way, not Biblically.
I'm not picking on you personally and I'm not saying that you or your church are apostate :hug ~ it's just that I've heard that excuse used so many times in the last couple of years that it stood out to me. It's so easy to say "oh, it's harmless; maybe something good will come of it." That's why the cancer is spreading so quickly throughout Christianity. We MUST be diligent about WHAT and WHO we listen to and what kind of spiritual food we give to the the lost.
Of course, this is all just my humble opinion. Sorry to have gotten on my soapbox :preach, so I'll go back to my mostly lurking mode again. God bless you!

For those of you who think Miley is ok, you should take a listen at her "Can't Be Tamed" song and better yet, watch the video.
Let me know if you should play this in Sunday school.

Right on!
Watch that video on YouTube. I dare you all who are so quick to defend her. It amazes me how some people will go to any length to defend their false Laodicean church-covens. Miley Cyrus has become a harlot-priestess in the name of her record label and easily misled audience. Saddleback has had some rather disturbing videos on the net as well, some involving their youth behaving like exotic dancers. They were sure quick to pull that one down after it was exposed here at RR.

But faith in what?
A missionary stayed with me (in Mexico) and made a comment that the Catholic people are "okay" because they have faith. I asked her what she was doing in Mexico based on her "faith" observations. Why not just leave the Catholics they way they are if they already have faith? She didn't know what to say because she didn't know that "faith" is not enough. One has to know WHO s/he has faith in.
There is absolutely no wiggle-room when it comes to God's salvation plan. He implemented it, He gives it to whoever He wills, and He makes the rules.
I can understand donuts for kids, but worship? ? Scripture says they that worship must worship in Spirit and in Truth. No one is allowed to worship God in carnal ways using selfish desires. Like God says, HIS mandates and commands, not our ways and desires, are effective.

Amen WarGamer!!
I really don't want to get into the 'conspiracy' theories but all you have to do is do a little research. Just check out Beyonce/Sasha Fierce.... Miley was quoted somewhere to say that Beyonce is one of her idols.
I dare any of you to take some time and research the music industry.... specifically Beyonce.
Still waiting for anyone to answer my question a couple of posts up.

That song doesn't MENTION letalne praise or respect or etc God, Jesus, or Holy Spirit, so it shouldn't be sung in church let alone as worship

lyrics:
I can almost see it
That dream I'm dreaming but
There's a voice inside my head sayin,
You'll never reach it,
Every step I'm taking,
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking but I
Got to keep trying
Got to keep my head held high
There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb
The struggles I'm facing,
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down but
No I'm not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I'm going to remember most yeah
Just got to keep going
And I,
I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on, cause
There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb (yeah)
There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes you going to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb (yeah yeah ea ea)
Keep on moving
Keep climbing
Keep the faith baby
It's all about
It's all about
The climb
Keep the faith
Keep your faith
Whoa a oh oh
