I am desperate from info on the cheapest way to start homeschooling 3 kids. I am considering pulling my kids out of public school. I don't know if I have the sanity to do it though. My twin boys have Bi-Polar and really need the structured set up of school. Having said that, one of my boys was beat up AGAIN today for the 2nd time since school started. His nose is broken. He was covered in blood from head to toe when I picked him up. Long story short, I was not happy how any of it was handled or the Principle's attitude and answers. The Principle and I went at it. The boys go to an all boys middle school, which is the only one in our town. The school has a reputation for problems. The first time (same son), he came home (3rd day of school) with 2 black eyes, a busted mouth and a badly bruised temple. And the school never called me. Today, they didn't call me, my son did.

I cannot afford private school and really can't afford to order the homeschooling materials. If I do this, I will also have to really juggle things, as I work from home also.

I have always given others who homeschool so much respect and never thought this was something I could handle on so many levels. But, after today, I am seriously thinking about it. Any advice would be helpful.

On a side note of concern......after he called me, I got there within a couple minutes as we live one street from the school, there was NO ONE in ANY of the offices. Both of my sons were in front of the school watching for me and we searched and searched for someone and finally ran across their band teacher who seemed not too concerned and didn't help us find someone and went into some room. We finally found the Principle on the play ground and that is when the fireworks began. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE could have come into that school and done ANYTHING they wanted. The first thought that came into my mind is the threats we have been talking about here regarding the elementary and middle schools.

Needless to say, I am at my wits end today!!!!!

The first thing I think you should do, is call the police right now, and file a police a report, and file charges against the principal. Then find an attorney who will work with you probono, and go after that school.

Second, DO NOT send your children to school tomorrow. If you are in a state where you have to notify that you will be homeschooling then start doing that today. Don't worry, that you aren't ready to start your schooling, that's not as important as the schools make it out to be. The important thing is keeping your children safe.

Which state are you in, and I will get you as much information as you need on homeschooling on your state. I'll post in a different post.

There's lots you can do to keep the cost down. Unit studies are a great way to do that, because you can homeschool children who are at different levels, using the same curriculum, except for math. You may just have to supplement.

There's another homeschooling thread here in the ladies forum, where I posted a whole bunch of homeschooling links. You may want to check it out. but one I posted is for Learning Adventures. It's an all inclusive unit study program, that is for grades 4 through 8. It covers all subjects, except math. The only thing you may have to do is supplement for some langauge, but you can do that for free by printing worksheets off the internet, or going to the library and using their resources.

I was going to file charges and decided against it for several reasons. There is a police officer who floats between my daughter's elementary school and the middle school that I talked to today about it. He happened to be at the middle school today but wasn't around when it happened. In fact, he told me that had he seen it, he would've had to arrest both boys. When I talked to him about filing a report he told me I would also have to agree to appear and testify in court if the other child was arrested. And depending on the judge, my child could also get into trouble as he pushed the boy when it happened. Because my son had "layed hands" on the other boy, he could also get into trouble. Not to mention, I would lose time and money from work going through all of the procedures. I work from home as as independant employee and can't afford to lose any money. The worst that would happen to the other kid is that he gets into trouble with the judge. There are no medical costs they would have to pay as my sons are on medicaid due to their Bi-Polar and being on SSI. Then of course, I was worried about retaliation from that kid and his friends and them maybe cornering my son in a bathroom or something one day.

I don't think I can file charges on the principle, cause the police officer I talked to said the principle was going my school procedure. He did suspend the other kid though.

I have to say I am scared to death to homeschool, I just don't know if I have it in me, especially with the boys. But I am starting to wonder if I have a choice. I live in Jacksonville,AR. I would definately appreciate any help on this as I am SO clueless with this. Thanks for offering to help NewWorldOrder.

The best advice I was ever given is to take your time seeing what's out there and finding out how your kids learn before buying anything. I took a whole year to really find out what was really needed and what would really work with my kids. While I was working all that out, we did a lot of "deschooling" as a family. We read a lot of books from the library, played a lot of board games, and got really involved in several hobbies and activities.

Basically, homeschooling can cost as much or as little as you want it to.

When you took that year searching and "deschooling", didn't you to have to be accountable to someone? I thought this stuff was regulated and you are held accountable for your kid's schooling. Doesn't it have to be on par with the school system?

I have to say that I am totally blown away by this approach to learning spelling! :yeah

My ds is in 4th this year and is a very slow reader and has had a hard time with spelling as well. I was pretty unsure of this approach when I first got the book because it is very different. I decided to give it a month and see how well it goes but we are only on day 8 and ds is doing unbelievably better!! :yay
