Ok here is the run-down on what's happend, for our children Nick Annie and JJ and especially our oldest Matthew Tuesday morning 09/18/07 my dh and I informed the principal of the public school system via phone that we had been in discussion as to whether our children would remain in the public system or come out for private education and that we had finally reached our decision and our children "Are no longer going to be attending the Public School System for their education they are going to be receiving private education", then my dh husband took a handwritten confirmation of the telephone conversation to the school and gave it to the principal as he had to pick up one of our children's medicine.

Wednesday 09/19/07 my son JJ's former teacher called to ask where he was because he was concerned. I explained to him that we informed the principal in writing as well as the telephone our children would not be returning and were going to receive private education. He said he was not informed of this as the principal did not mention this to him. I told him "That does not surprise me". He said thank you for at least telling him what was going on and wished our son well, I said the same.

Thursday 09/20/07 This morning I received a call from the Social Worker at the school my children previously attended and she said she was calling about the children. I said the following, "Why? My husband and I informed the principal by phone and in writing that are children would not be coming back as they are going to be receiving a private education." She asked me if I knew the name of the private school. I said the following, "Yes I do. We are homeschooling our children." She asked me if I had registered with the Board of Education yet. I replied the following, "No because Indiana Law which is posted on their website and we were also advised by the HomeSchool Legal Defense Assoiciation of Indiana Law as well is that you do not have to register, acquire any licensing, or do any required testing, or follow a certain curriculum, The only time you have to fill out any paperwork in regards to registering is ONLY IF THE SUPERINTENDANT OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION (not the public school superintendant) SENDS YOU A LETTER IN WRITING AND THEN IT IS ONLY THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS YOU ARE EDUCATING (number only - not personal data such as names or age, etc.). " She said okay really quickly and said she knew people at her church who homeschooled and asked me if I had all the curriculum I needed. I told her the following" Yes I do, between the curriculum we have and we also have a computer with online acces we have all the curriculum in the world at our disposal but I do thank you for asking." That pretty much was the end of the conversation.

I felt really well, actually I took pride in telling her I knew the laws regarding homeschooling and I enjoyed the fact that the second I mentioned them to her, told her she could look them up on the computer, and mentioned the HomeSchool Legal Defense Association she suddenly knew about homeschooling because people at her church do it and if we needed help with anything we could still call her...I almost felt bad because I took pride in putting her in place, for a moment I thought I hope the Lord forgives me for this.

So on another note our first 2.5 days of homeschooling has went well. We have spent 14.5 hours so far educating our children in the following:

Bible Classes (DH and I both teach)
Industrial Arts (SHOP for the older boys -DH teaches)
Home Ec/Life Skills
Math
Science
Reading and Writing
Health
Social Studies (DH and I both teach)
English
Current Events
Computer Class (DH and I both teach)
Art

The children really like the breaks we are able to take in between, the free time for recreation, doing the work til they get it completed and grasp the concept of the lesson and the open discussion we have about what we learn.

They have asked if we can make a family homeschool newspaper to send out every month to their Grandparents to show what we are learning and who has acheived what. They also like the ability to have online interaction on their subjects and even the ability to sign up for some online classes.

Our mornings are much more enjoyable, sleeping in til 9, a relaxed breakfast then getting started by around 10-11 and not having to rush out the door and having the personal attention to what they are learning....Their attitudes are slowly changing and they seem more relaxed. My DH enjoyed being able to spend time with his children before work and our daughter seems at ease somehow because she didn't really like going to school she's 6 and she said she missed us real bad...I know we have done the right thing now.

I wanted to let you all know how things were going, now I would like your continued prayer because for anyone else who would call our show up I will be prepared.

Thanks,
Nannette

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I am so happy for you Nannette. Sounds like everything is going great for you guys. I'm starting next week homeschooling my 3 children. I feel so good about it now (was very, very scared at first).

I think you handled that social worker just perfect! Will keep you in my prayers.

:yeah

Congrats on hs. It's an adventure and I can't even explain what a blessing it is teaching your children.

You handled the school and social worker wonderfully and calmly, which is what we are advised to do.

Hats off to you. :hug

Great! You were very professional and I'm glad your first few days went so nice. Isn't it nice to have a stress free morning? That is one of our favorite things about HS. No stress in the mornings. Nice family breakfast, family prayer time, etc.

Good for you and your family.
