GM Says UAW Has Launched a National Strike Against the Automaker

DETROIT (AP) -- Thousands of United Auto Workers walked off the job at GM plants around the country Monday, in the first nationwide strike during auto contract negotiations since 1976.
GM spokesman Dan Flores said the union launched a national strike after the late morning UAW strike deadline passed without agreement on a new contract, which would include a groundbreaking provision establishing a UAW-managed trust that will administer GM's retiree health care obligations.

The UAW has 73,000 members who work for GM at 82 U.S. facilities, including assembly and parts plants and warehouses. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070924/auto_talks.html?.v=46

GM's stockpile of vehicles may get them through a short term strike, but with JIT, many smaller companies/suppliers will be hurt immediately.

GM wanting to pay too little, and the UAW wanting too much. Both of them are going to get hurt by this.

OK, so they'll just have production done at plants in Mexico instead. That's what everybody else has done.

Long term, yes. Brazil too. But short term, it will hurt the company some but mostly the myriad of smaller companies that supply GM and, of course, all of their workers.

the union wants way to much..
I don't buy GM, FORD, or Chevy anymore because I got tired of the repair bills.

... a sad situation all around. Yes. Me thinks there will be many of them in the next several years.

Just completed my first year in selling automobiles.

Small profit margins for the dealers. Large incentives devalue your car. Chrysler customers are always in for a very rude suprise when they see how little their car is worth. Many dealers are out of business leaving customers with logistical nightmare of where they will have their car serviced.

My friends I tell them to not a new car. pay cash for an older car. get a mechanic you trust.

The UAW slit the throat of its members years ago when they demanded and got excessive wages and benefits. No way is a factory line worker woth $25. dollars an hour plus cradle to grave benefits. Im a nurse and i cant get the wage/benefit package those workers have. The lose of good manufacturing jobs is in part the fault of the unions getting to greedy. I in no way place all of the blame on the unions, NAFTA sure helped too. I think GM was hoping for a strike. They can file bankrupcy then ship the jobs to Mexico. The workers are going to lose one way or another Im afraid. Another lose lose situation for this country
