We started to home schooled our daughter after she did one month of her 4th grade class at a public school.:nod
Here is how we did it. To start, we used computer teaching programs, ie Math Blaster, Reading Blaster, Carman Sandeigo series, Math in the Real World, Britannica Encyclopedia, World Book, & Bible Stories We also got her the Microscope (Intel Play?) that hooked up to the computer. She went nuts with this....:yeah
Trips to the library for books, lets not forget the zoo and the shoreline to find those treasures. Everything we did through out the day was used for learning. Shopping, Banking, Bill paying, Laundry, Cooking, you get the idea. At one point Sasha wanted a pet Ferret......This was used to teach her Responsibility. Next was a Cockatiel. Before I forget, we had started Sasha in Karate at the age of 5 (before home schooling) She is still going and is 2 belts away from getting her Black Belt.
Now for the good stuff; when Sasha had her 14th Birthday, we could enroll her in the Thomson Education Direct High School Diploma Course. (The name has been changed to Penn Foster Career School). Our Daughter Sasha, Graduated June 20, 2007 with a 91% GPA and received her Diploma and a class ring from Penn Foster High School. This school is highly accredited, we check them out. The cost was less than $650.00 at the time we signed up. If one were to make a stack of the material (books) that was for this course, it would be about 3ft high, if not higher. Sasha had 3 years to complete the course, however there a two 6 month extensions. Sasha used one of them.
We took an active role in helping her with the lessons. We would look over all her test answers before she completed them online, marking the ones that needed more work.
After she looked them over and made any corrections, she could then take the test online, and sometimes not getting a passing grade. Had to do a make up.
At one point in this course we had to get some help for her (and us) in the higher math. I do computer math and I am also a pilot, so I have some math. But this stuff....way over my head.
This course work well for us and our daughter. Thought you would like some first hand info.
