This is from a Catholic Apologetic site. At least I think it's apologetic.
Never the less, here is tells of the Scapular and what it means in regards to Mary's position in the Catholic Church.

The site (http://www.ewtn.com/expert/expertfaqframe.asp)

And a snip:
A scapular is a garment worn by religious over the shoulders (scapula), and hanging down in front and back, usually to about the bottom of the habit. It developed as a practical garment, protecting the habit during work, and was in time invested with spiritual significance, consecration or dedication to God.By analogy to the scapulars of religious, there are small scapulars that are derived from them which represent a particular devotion or spirituality, usually associated with a particular community.
The best part is this:
The best known and most highly esteemed scapular, and the one most favored by the Church, and by the Blessed Virgin in many of her apparitions, is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. It is adapted from the scapular of the Carmelite Order and represents a special Consecration to Our Lady under the title of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Those who wear it practice it a special devotion to Mary. In the past this was the Little Office of Our Lady, but today this can be commuted by any priest to the rosary. In addition, the person has a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation. This, in fact, has been promised to those who faithfully wear the scapular: "Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire." This must not be understood superstitiously or magically, but in light of Catholic teaching that perseverance in faith, hope and love are required for salvation. The scapular is a powerful reminder of this Christian obligation and of Mary's promise to help those consecrated to her obtain the grace of final perseverance.

Wow, no magic here, just plain old Catholic teaching. Wear this and you will have a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation. :shocked

Isn't that sad? My Mother, a devout catholic, tucks one of these scapulars of mary in her bra every morning when she gets dressed. She literally will not be without it. I'm not sure what she does with it when she gets into her PJ's at night. She also sleeps with her rosary beads so that she can pray to mary when she wakes in the night, as she often does.

I am heartsick for my Mother and other catholics and pray continually that they would know the Truth.

C. The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Also known as the Brown Scapular, this is the best known, most celebrated, and most widespread of the small scapulars. It is spoken of as "the Scapular", and the "feast of the Scapular" is that of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on 16 July. It is probably the oldest scapular and served as the prototype of the others. According to a pious tradition the Blessed Virgin appeared to St. Simon Stock at Cambridge, England, on Sunday, 16 July, 1251. In answer to his appeal for help for his oppressed order, she appeared to him with a scapular in her hand and said: "Take, beloved son this scapular of thy order as a badge of my confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites a special sign of grace; whoever dies in this garment, will not suffer everlasting fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in dangers, a pledge of peace and of the covenant". This tradition, however, appears in such a precise form for the first time in 1642, when the words of the Blessed Virgin were given in a circular of St. Simon Stock which he is said to have dictated to his companion secretary, and confessor, Peter Swanyngton. Although it has now been sufficiently shown that this testimony cannot be supported by historical documents, still its general content remains a reliable pious tradition; in other words, it is credible that St. Simon Stock was assured in a supernatural manner of the special protection of the Blessed Virgin for his whole order and for all who should wear the Carmelite habit, that the Blessed Virgin also promised him to grant special aid, especially in the hour of death, to those who in holy fidelity wore this habit in her honour throughout life, so that they should be preserved from hell. And, even though there is here no direct reference to the members of the scapular confraternity, indirectly the promise is extended to all who from devotion to the Mother of God should wear her habit or badge, like true Christians, until death, and be thus as it were affiliated to the Carmelite Order.

"Whosoever dies clothed in this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire"
- Mary's promise to St. Simon Stock - July 16, 1251

I wonder exactly how this thing works?

Oh dear! And I thought I had to confess my sins before God through Jesus Christ and trust Him to save my soul from eternal damnation. What on earth was I thinking?! Those Catholics just have all the answers and try to keep them hush hush too! :puke

This is sooooo sad!! These poor deceived people will go to Hell because they trust in a church alone, and not Jesus Christ alone . I pray God opens your mother's eyes soon. I suppose you have already tried to talk to your mother?

Since the "Mary" who appears to these people is really a deceiving demon in disguise, I suppose all who trust in this "promise" end up in Hell :idunno.

Hi A Berean,

Thank you so much for your prayers on my Mother's behalf. And yes, I've been sharing the Truth with her for at least the last 7 years, as have my husband and two younger sisters. She is so dug in and brainwashed, and at age 77, I realize change in general is difficult for her.

I fear for her soul, I really do. Time is running out!!! I pray for a road-to-Damascus conversion for her, if the Lord so chooses to open her eyes that way. I hang on to the fact that with Him all things are possible and that He doesn't want anyone to perish, but I know He will not force anyone to accept His sacrifice as full payment for their sin.

Again, thank you for your prayers.........

and I'm sorry I've hijacked this thread! Back on topic!

This is very much on topic :hug, and my heart goes out to you! I prayed for my Mom for 20 years, and she became a Christian 2 months before she died at age 73. Yes, His Holy Spirit can work on the hearts of our loved ones, convicting them of sin and the need for salvation in Jesus Christ alone.

Your mother is a living victim of this Catholic heresy, and these people go on being deceived because they think they are "saved" by this religious relic and a false "Mary". I pray other Catholics see these posts and realize just how much danger they are in!

My best friend has worn one for years, and all 8 of her kids wear one everyday. One day, my 10 yr old son asked their 10 year old what that "brown piece of felt" was that was hanging down his back. The boy proceeded to tell my son that this was his guarantee into heaven....he would not go to hell if died wearing one of these.
