WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

So that means, that I, as a single person and already in a huge tax bracket because I'm single, will have to cough up $5000 more bucks to help pay for this. I may have to come up with it several times.
I wonder what the ratio of children born today is to working and taxpaying citizens?
Sounds like a good way to bankrupt the country IMHO. I have nothing against helping young people, but I'm already in such a huge tax bracket, I am not able to save as much as I would like to for my retirement.

Heh, I guess outright bribery works too.
Time to bring up the quote from this guy I've seen floating around:
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years.
These nations have progressed through this sequence:
from bondage to spiritual faith
from spiritual faith to great courage
from courage to liberty
from liberty to abundance
from abundance to selfishness
from selfishness to complacency
from complacency to apathy
from apathy to dependency
from dependency back to bondage.
-- Alexander Fraser Tytler (1742-1813)
Not much I can add to that, really.

Give me a break I paid for my own college education why should I pay for someone elses. I bought my first car, why would I want to buy someone else one. She's a joke, this is typical of liberal politics if you can't turn an issue into rich vs. poor, white vs. black, and democrate vs. republican then just buy the vote!
I bet there's a lot of people this is going to attract.:fishslap

Doesn't "$5,000 for every child" = "a chicken in every pot"?
$5,000, a chicken, etc., IT'S ALL THE SAME BALOGNA!:groan

The article says about 4 million babies are born each year in America. So, if my math is correct, it will cost about $20 billion each year to pay for this. Considering the yearly budgest is about $2.5 trillion each year, $20 billion is mere peanuts.
Of course, we're not really getting much for our $2.5 trillion. Yes, the military cost (~$600 billion) is important, but it seems that we pay a lot more than we receive in government services.
Personally, I like the idea of setting aside money for the future (the children). At least it can be said that the American taxpayer will in fact be getting that money back. However, I suspect that the program will cost a great deal more than $20 billion each year. I suspect it'll probably cost upwards of $100 billion each year simply to doll out $20 billion.
Here's a thought. How about we eliminate some pork spending and give that money to our children? I'm all for Hillary's idea if the money will be deducted from the Department of Education or some other bloated government program that requires our money but gives us nothing in return. Heck, let's just give every American baby $100,000 and shut down a bunch of government programs that are already biting into our paychecks?
Wait! How about we just cut tax rates and give that money back to Americans so they can give that money to their own children? Instead of taxing the American people so Hillary can turn around and give that money back, how about just cut taxes and save everyone the trouble of paying taxes than trying to get $5,000 back from Uncle Sam?
