I chose a unit study to do with my 3rd grader this year. This study is a Christian Cottage Early American History study. It covers history and science, and I have other curriculum for her other subjects.
My problem is that I don't like the unit study. I want to quit using it. It isn't detailed enough for me, and it moves really fast. Too fast, to really get anything out of it. I've tried slowing it down, but I just want to get through it so I can use Learning Adventures next year, which is a very, very good unit study. I want to quit using what I have and just do something else, but I don't know what. I don't have much money to spend. I thought I would pick up the Exploring Creation with Botany book I already have, and use that then just do reading for her history. She's only in third grade, but I'll feel kind of guilty if I just quit doing history and science, and just do languange and math. The problem is that I really don't like projects. The Exploring Creation with Botany has quite a few projects and that's just more stuff I have to buy.
Any ideas on what I can do, or should I just muddle through?

Go to the library and good some good books on American History in her reading level and have her read them.
You don't need a curriculum at this age and if you don't like all the projects then don't do them... you don't have to.
For science you can do the same thing. Just a bunch of good books

Why not turn it into a lap book project? Knowledge Box has some and so does Home School in the Woods. You can look at the projects online and get some ideas. I'm doing one with my son and he's really enjoying it.

That's what we have been doing for history -- hadn't thought about that for science.. good idea!
My kids' love living books for history.. Also let them pick the topic they want and they will totally delve into it.. At least i have found that to be true with mine. I have even used history fiction to pique there interest.

Well, she is showing a lot of interest in the American Girl books. Maybe I could create a study around them. I can let her choose which book she wants to read, and we'll study that period in history. Do you think it's OK to start history in the middle instead of at the beginning?

:lol2 Alrighty then! Thanks ya'll, I was really getting frustrated. This is going to make my life easier.
She wants to learn about Samantha and tornados. Cool! We'll start on that as soon as we get back from our trip. We leave Thursday to go see my new nephew. He was born Sunday morning at 12:04 a.m., and we want to see him.
Now, I just need to read the Samantha book and get started. :yeah

We love the American Girl books. My mother sent a box full that she found at garage sells. :yeah
She also included American Doll paper doll books (things that we used to play with, my girls thought that was awesome) and American doll craft books. The crafts are items that children can made back in that time era. I like it because it's a learning tool plus the crafts are easy for a non-artist person, like me. Art!!!!
I have been struggling with our history/science books, too. It reminds me too much of school, just reading, boring. I'm looking into other options because I want to be physically involved too.
