LONDON (Reuters) - Soaring food prices will hurt the world's poor and increase the risks of political upheaval, a senior United Nations food agency official said on Thursday.
"We are squeezed between increasing oil prices and food price hikes," said Alexander Sarris, director, commodities and trade, of the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
He said the world's poorest people were the most vulnerable to the impact of surging grain prices, driven by falling stocks, rising production costs due to higher energy prices, adverse weather, faster economic growth and increasing biofuels demand.

Seems like there is nothing good in the news these days. It all seems so depressing. Life seems like a struggle everyday.
Come Lord Jesus quickly we need You more than ever.
In Jesus name Amen

Oh but the poor are that way because they just don't have enough faith.
And besides everyone can't be rich.
Our business and corporations are much more important and hey they are doing well so the poor should just be happy with what they have and really they are doing pretty good compared to starving people.
Poor people should just buckle down and learn to live on less. Especially those children and their lazy parents who thought they should get insurance, gimme a break, who do they think they are anyway??

I can testify that the higher food prices are hurting me. I can barely afford to buy the essentials, and forget about buying fruits and vegetables that are through the roof.
The only food that you can buy that gives you enough food to eat are starches, such as spagetti, potatos, noodles, flour and rice, which are not as healthy to eat as vegies and fruits. They tell us that food costs less because illegal immigrants work the farms, but it isn't true. Maybe the middle men get the money, because it sure isn't passed on to the consumer.

Absolutely right. Healthy foods are ridiculous......but they constantly harp that we don't eat enough of them.
Between a rock and a hard place.:rolleyes It always amazes me when I see prices rise through the roof like this, and know that inflation is outrageous, yet when it comes to a raise based on inflation, it is miniscule.

But no matter how it "feels" we know this has to be wrong because President Bush just said today that the economy is doing just fine. Things are not bad it is just all in our heads. Probably the result of liberal scare tactics and feminazi witch powers.

I say we boycot eating for a week or maybe even a month.
That will show them who is boss.
Seriously, it usually takes a lot for me to notice price increases in food. But even I have begun to be shocked at some of the prices on the store shelves. More than once, I've not placed an item in my cart due to the high price.
I am always reminded that in coming times, a piece of bread will buy a bag of gold.
We do have to eat......

We should just worry about getting a Republican in the White House. Eating is no where near as important.

Lets not forget that the "solution" to all of our oil dependency woes, ethanol, is fueling alot of this too. I feel terrible for those in countries such as Mexico, whose meager wages are spent to buy corn and corn products as a staple, have their food prices tripled just so we can produce 10 gallons of E-85 which requires almost that much fuel to produce! Oh, lets also not forget your tax dollars go to subsidize this saving fuel work.

Which is money better spent:
Spend it on food or spend it on internet connectivity.
Spend it on food or spend it on cable TV.
Spend it on food or spend it on that cell phone.
If people don't have enough money for food, make the cuts in the budget.
...and if food prices go up, a) the farmers/agri-businesses may benefit, b) people will adjust their spending habits and, market-bearing, prices will go down to match the spending habits.
Food prices in the USA, unless perhaps you're in Hawaii or somewhere else where most food has to be imported, aren't at Soylent Green levels and won't be so unless there's some sort of serious catastrophe, like the Rapture, for instance.
