""The age between 30 and 50 seems to have some significance in the Old Testament.
Gen 41:46, "Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt."
2 Sam 5:4, "David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years."
Numbers 4:3, "Count them all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work in the Tent of Meeting."
Also see Numbers 4, 23, 30, 35, 39, 43, 47.
Looks like in the book of Numbers anyone over the age of 50 would be considered in old age.""
this is probably what i was thinking of. although there are other places where the men are counted from age 20.:scratch oh well....so much for my theory.:doh

My childhood sweetheart is a full blooded virgin jew and he is a minister in South Carolina. If anyone knows him, they already know who I'm talking about. His name is David. He has red hair and he is a very unusual and dynamic person. One of the best preachers I have ever heard. David, if you are reading this, I'm talking about you!!! You are a great guy. I ended up marrying another guy named David.

This doesn't quite make sense. I'm 62 and just a few months older than the birth of Israel in May 1948, so, a person would not necessarily be quite a bit older or passed on when at the start of the State of Israel. Anyone born in the few months before that would not be quiete a bit older than Israel. There could be (and I'm sure there are) those born right on the day Isael became a state.
MsSophie - I didn't want you to think I'd forgotten you... :hug
You actually made me look up the definition of the word "generation". :hehee Using these http://www.thefreedictionary.com/generation , I think if you were born two months before Israel (how cool is that?) then you were the second generation of those in whose generation was the birth of Israel. In other words, a generation removed.
When I was recently in Israel, I met with many Holocaust survivors and others who were young and at their peak of life and built the State. That generation has been dying off for years now. :candle It is the reason that those who want to memorialize their stories for history have had to do it quickly. Very few are left now. Israel is feeling that loss.

I'm sorry but I'm not understanding this. Since I was born before Israel became a state then I along with anyone else who was born before Israel became a state would be in the generation who saw these things come to pass (Israel becoming a nation) even if we were too young to realize it at the time.

Every time I read about the 144,000 I get very confused about who they are. Does anyone really know or point me in the right direction with more scripture to try and understand?

These are a remnant of Israel God will keep for himself. They will be sealed before the destruction of the world. God will, of course, honor His covenant with Israel and they will be His people. Throughout the ages, there is always a remnant as God brings His people Israel to the end of the age.
