Unfortunately, I watched CBS' Cold Case TV show again tonight. Last week the story line was about supposedly Christian teens stoning a girl with loose morals and this week they took on the Amish. This week's killer was a "banned" Amish boy. Well, at least the Amish don't have TV's so they couldn't be offended by this show. That's it for me. I'm sick of people who believe in and serve God being portrayed as hypocrites and killer psychos. Another show to mark off my list. We're pretty much down to TVLand, Boomerang, and TCM. If it wasn't for dd, I'd probably just cancel cable and stop watching TV. The majority of shows on are garbage and aren't worth watching.

I lived in Lancaster county, PA from the age of 3 to 13, in the heart of Amish country. They are a simple people who just want to live their lives as they see fit, and not be given a bunch of grief about it. They usually take such intrusions into their lives in stide, but like anyone they get frustrated too. Tourists drive up into their yards, walk around, take pictures of them (which they don't like)...very impolite! They get accosted in town by people who they they're quaint or stuck-up. It's sad. I think people are so interested in them because most people don't understand why they'd want to live like they're in another era. They don't dislike progress, they just think the rest of the world is moving too fast and forgetting the important things in life like family, faith, morality, God! That's the truth, really! And they have their problems, of course. No particular group is without its problems. The recent schoolhouse killings put the spotlight on them, and they acted true to form. They even reached out to the family of the shooter. Rumors float around about terrible things that happen inside the Amish community that outsiders are kept from hearing, like child abuse and incest, but I can't speak to that, as I have no firsthand knowledge of such things.
I agree about TV...it is a wasteland of garbage anymore. Shame about Cold Case, it used to be a pretty good show.

That's a shame. I have a deep respect for the Amish, considering my homeschool material was done by CLE/Alpha Omega which is distributed by Mennonites :) (There's a close tie of history there, as well as the shared history of all anabaptists and the split with Baptists)
I met a fellow who used to be old order mennonite when I came to Germany last year, which was really interesting. I recognised him first by his accent, and then it came out about his being old order mennonite because of my headcovering which was mennonite. (It was a compromise to my usual scarves to help folks feel more comfortable with my travelling)
There are so many rumors about the Mennonites and Amish that it is really sad..
Does anyone remember the TV show 'Amish in the City'? I only got to see some of it, and thankfully it did show the Amish in a relatively good light.

It is a wasteland of garbage. A great tool for dehumanizing people, and a most reliable for helping towards the decay of our country. Never thought I would be saying that.:ohno
