I think that the MAD doctrine is very much in effect and will continue to be as long as large nuclear arsenals are maintained. I think Putin is ambitious but I doubt he is crazy. Don't you think that 40 years of Cold War scenarios of mutually assured destruction would ensure that there would always be an early warning system and a massive retaliatory attack that would destroy Russia just as much as Russia could destroy the US? Therefore if Russia is going to be around for endtimes prophetic fulfillment, it has to mean that Russia would not have tried any nuclear misadventures prior to that. About the only way US could be powerless to carry out a massive retaliatory second strike is if some future US President and Congress ordered a massive reduction in armed forces and nuclear arsenals and their command and control systems.
