Hey people
as you probably know already, I'm 15 and I have strong christian point of views..
however, before i was strongly devouted to christianity i started drinking and smoking... i've stopped drinking, thankfully, but i still occasionaly smoke... like maybe once or twice a week i'll light one up by myself. I want to just stop for good because its a waste of money, it's decietful because my mother and father think i stopped smoking a long time ago like late august... and it's unhealthy, and I JUST got a job as a Jr. Firefighter and they're gonna do a drug test next month... i don't know if nicotine will be detected... anyway... any suggestions on how to quit completely? I mean its bad because i'll go for a bike ride and come back smelling like colon and axe&tag and i'll tell my mom i was chilling with my friends... ... i don't even HAVE any friends to chill with... i feel bad admitting to my other christian friends that i still occasionaly smoke... i mean its just nasty... ultimatly its an expensive way to expose you to cancer and breathing problems... I can't tell my mother.. i don't know what would come first, i'd break her heart then she'd kill me, or she'd kill me then break her heart... :panic
thanks people i appreciate it

jesusfreak,
i have never smoked, so you will have to take my opinion with that in mind.
i did grow up with parents who valued smoking more than they valued eating. my mother smoked up until she was on her deathbed and would have liked to then, too, but was too weak. it is a horrible horrible addiction and a nasty habit that kills not only those who choose to smoke, but also those around them.
so i guess my POV on quitting is this: JUST STOP. When Jesus encountered people who sinned and would come to him for forgiveness, he would not say "go and try and stop sinning when you can"...he'd say "Go and sin NO MORE." I believe that if you truly want to stop and you truly lean on Him, He will give you the strength to overcome it.
It is written:
1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
Do you believe this? Is God BIG enough to help you combat your addiction to nicotine? You are only 15, so I would guess your addiction is not as strong as one who is much older than you and been smoking as long or longer than you've been alive. Even so, is God faithful to do as He promises? If He has said He will provide a way out, then He will, amen?
You can do it.
oh, and a bit off topic on my 'advice'...may i ask how old you were when you began drinking and smoking? To me you are still just a baby....i have an 11 year old daughter (oldest) and it blows my mind when i see kids that aren't much older than she is involved in drinking, drugs, sex,etc....i guess the innocence is stripped away so young.....
Anyway, back on topic:
Remember...YOU CAN DO THIS if you lean on Him!

i was 14 when i started.. it was a veryy stupid thing to do... it's intresting you say i'm still kind of a child because i'm 15 and it can be looked at as either i'm 3 years older than 12 which is definitly a kid, or 3 years away from being 18 which is adult...

Take several tablespoons per day of baking soda washed down with warm water, it will alkalize your bloodstream so the nicotine stays in longer so you can gradually quit.

when you're 1.5 times the age you are now you'll probably agree that at 15 you were most definitely a child. lol. you'll also probably agree that at 18 you were a child...who just thought you were an adult because a number said so. :aha
also, its kind of like the difference between a newborn and a three year old--its HUGE....but, they're both still children.
you probably don't appreciate me saying that (and its not meant as a slight) but...the older you get, the more you'll look back and agree that you probably weren't an 'adult' until you got into your 20s. and even THAT for some people is a stretch. LOL!!
anyway.
back on topic.
how is your attempt to stop smoking going?

You have to really and truly 100% want to quit, or else it won't stick. I quit cold turkey but putting a list up on my fridge with all the reasons to quit, such as:
1. You'll save lots of money;
2. You won't stink (of cigs anyway);
3. What if you got tongue cancer (can't taste, can't talk, etc.);
4. What if you worked hard all your life and then got lung cancer and died before you could retire;
5. People who don't smoke think you're an idiot;
6. Smokers are perceived as weak and nervous by non-smokers (not cool);
7. Food tastes better when you don't smoke;
8. Smoking affects blood circulation, so you look pasty.
Those are a few. I forget the others. Best of luck to you. Cold turkey is best. Be strong. You can do it!

here's another one:
You'll be taking care of your body (good stewardship), which is the temple of the living God.
