April 18 (Bloomberg) -- A magnitude-5 earthquake struck northern California early today, the U.S. Geological Survey said in an e-mailed statement. There were no reports of damage as of 6 a.m. local time, a state official said.

The epicenter of the 1:42 a.m. temblor was 174 kilometers (108 miles) northwest of Sacramento and 14 kilometers west- northwest of Lake Pillsbury, said the USGS, which measures world seismological events.

A magnitude-4 earthquake struck three hours later off the coast of central California, 289 kilometers south of the city of San Jose, the USGS said.

``We've been in touch with local officials and there are no reports of any damage,'' Eric Lamoureux, a spokesman for the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, said in an interview.
