Calidamo,
I don't have any pictures, but I am trying to plan a self-guided elk hunt in Idaho for 2008. I would be hunting public land. Could you provide any comments or advise?

Calidamo:
I will be driving in from Mississippi (Hernando is just south of Memphis, Tennessee) with some family members from Middle Tennessee. I haven't been to Idaho in about 40 years and I am 46 so I don't remember a thing about it. I like the idea of buying a permit over the counter instead of applying for a draw hunt. Any area of the state will be fine.
It will be a family hunt. Myself, two brothers, one brother-in-law and two nephews. Staying in hotel would be fine or camping out. Not interested in record book elk, just want shootable bulls and maybe a mule deer.
One of my brothers wants a guided hunt, but I want to do it on my own. I like to scout and plan my hunt. He wants to shoot an elk. I want to spend time hunting them, not just shooting them. He is to check on guided hunts, and I am to check on self guided hunts. We'll let the others decide between the two.
Don't know the difference between a controlled hunt and regular zone A or B tag. What is the deal with a "Elk Tag" and "Elk Permit?" Will I need both? Are permits limited to elk unit or to any unit in a zone?
We will be hunting on foot or with four wheelers. (Note: Currently, we don't own any four wheelers, expect that we will need buy used ones. Are there any regulations on size and type?) Since we will be limited on number of 4 wheelers that we could transport, rolling land may be better than steep mountains.
As you can see, any help would be appreaciated. If you want, you can send me a private message.

God gave them arms and claws and teeth...."skin that one pilgrim and I'll get you another"
Boy killed by bear at Utah campsite, bear killed by rangers
An 11-year-old boy was dragged screaming from his family's tent and killed by a black bear during a Father's Day outing in the Utah wilderness.
The boy, his mother, stepfather and a 6-year-old brother were sleeping in a large tent Sunday night in American Fork Canyon, about 30 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, when the stepfather heard a scream.
The boy and his sleeping bag were gone. His body was found about 400 yards away, said Lt. Dennis Harris of the Utah County sheriff's office. His identity was not released.

There is no such thing as "fair" when someones life is on the line.....Im a little bitter when it comes to bears and wolves...especially wolves, anyone who thinks wolves are cool or "neat" is just flat out ignorant. They are plain and simply killing machines. Anyone who supported "wolf reintroduction" should be publicly flogged.
