-- The young teacher hung his head, avoiding eye contact. Yes, he had touched a fifth-grader's breast during recess. "I guess it was just lust of the flesh," he told his boss. That got Gary C. Lindsey fired from his first teaching job in Oelwein, Iowa. But it didn't end his career. He taught for decades in Illinois and Iowa, fending off at least a half-dozen more abuse accusations.
When he finally surrendered his teaching license in 2004 _ 40 years after that first little girl came forward _ it wasn't a principal or a state agency that ended his career. It was one persistent victim and her parents.

This story is so disturbing when you combine it with other stories in the news that in some School systems they are now providing birth control pills to six grade girls without parental permission.:ohno:rolleyes:candle

Is this another reason WHY school boards want young girls to have birth control pills WITHOUT THEIR PARENTS KNOWLEDGE AND CONSENT? In the old days, we'd say this was sneaking behind your parents back. Now those naughty teachers could get away with more sexual stuff - if they're on the pill?

Today, I put nothing past the godless liberals. The NEA protects teachers that molest students.

Sort of sends a mixed message doesn't it.
Giving out birth control to young girls sends a message that it is okay to have sex; which sets them up to become victim's of pedophiles.
Something else I would like to know is how many of these accusations were actually bona fide cases? Sexual assault charges are among the most difficult to prove either way. It is a he said/she, or some form there of, most of the time.
I had a friend who lost his job and reputation ruined over a false sexual assault accusation. Even when the truth finally came out, it was too little too late.

This is a horrendous article!

more excerpts:

Lindsey's case is just a small example of a widespread problem in American schools: sexual misconduct by the very teachers who are supposed to be nurturing the nation's children.

Students in America's schools are groped. They're raped. They're pursued, seduced and think they're in love.

An Associated Press investigation found more than 2,500 cases over five years in which educators were punished for actions from bizarre to sadistic.

...

Most of the abuse never gets reported. Those cases reported often end with no action. Cases investigated sometimes can't be proven, and many abusers have several victims.

...

The seven-month investigation found 2,570 educators whose teaching credentials were revoked, denied, surrendered or sanctioned from 2001 through 2005 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Young people were the victims in at least 1,801 of the cases, and more than 80 percent of those were students. At least half the educators who were punished by their states also were convicted of crimes related to their misconduct.

The findings draw obvious comparisons to sex abuse scandals in other institutions, among them the Roman Catholic Church. A review by America's Catholic bishops found that about 4,400 of 110,000 priests were accused of molesting minors from 1950 through 2002.

================================================== =============

The UGLY TRUTH is that the MAJORITY NEVER gets REPORTED!

THIS is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you were a predator, WHERE would you like to work - if you are an adult attracted to kids for sex?

A SCHOOL!

Especially a PUBLIC school since you know it practically takes moving a mountain to get caught and punished becuase the school district will DEFEND you and FIGHT for you.

I am not defending the NEA in anyway. However, what the NEA is trying to do is to protect the rights of the teacher. Okay before anybody gets their nose out of joint hear me out. The accused would have the same rights as anyone else that has been accused of a crime. In this case, if the teacher is a member and accused, then the NEA would see that the teacher is given due process through the school system. If not, then anyone that so chose to accuse a teacher for ANY reason, like that teacher gave me an F so I am going to get that teacher back.
School systems don't always follow due process, acutally it works both ways for and against teachers and students. What sometimes has me :scratch are the ones that are NOT MEMBERS of NEA and I am shocked with what they get away with.

As horrible as this sounds, this has been going on for a very long time. When I was in high school back in the 60's my driver's ed teacher wanted to teach me about more than just driving. He groped many young ladies through the years. Like my parents, their parents tried to get him fired but he had tenure so they couldn't. My mother told me this kind of thing was going on when she was young.

I do think there is more of it, now days, because the media has bombarded us with sex, sex, sex. I also agree with an above post, there are teachers who are falsely accused. Kids have become more vengeful and will turn a teacher in ---- just because. Very frightening world we live in......

I hear what you're saying ... but too often the SCHOOLS DON'T do proper background checks because it is TOO EXPENSIVE! So they're embarassed when they've hired a molestor. They don't want the embarassment. They know many folks are fed up with being coerced to going to a public school because they're taxed so badly in NJ, in particluar, they don't have the extra $$$ for private school or homeschooling. I find niothing positive about the NEA. They don't represent my values or beliefs. NO teacher should have tenure!

You have no idea on how true your statement is.
However, one thing, tenure is one thing that protects good teachers from bad administrators. My husband can tell you all about some really bad administrators.

I'm sure it does protect some good one but it also protects the bad ones.

I just simply see NO NEED FOR TENURE!

Report: 42 Nebraska Teachers Disciplined For Sexual Misconduct
The AP Finds 2,500 Educators In Trouble Nationally

OMAHA, Neb. -- The State Board of Education disciplined 42 Nebraska teachers for some form of sexual misconduct between 2001 and 2005.

The Associated Press analyzed state records for those years as part of a seven month nationwide examination of teacher misconduct.

The Nebraska cases included former Alliance High School art teacher Thatcher Lamm. He allegedly had sex with a student one day after she graduated in 2002. Lamm later lost his job and his teaching license.
