So often I've heard pastors, church members, etc., using the phrase "MY CHURCH." I realize that probably most of the time it's a way of identifying themselves with a congregation. However, is there a danger that some may be saying this, thinking they have rule and control in a particular church? IMHO, I would think GOD is in control, and it's HIS church (Jesus' actually, and really, WE are the church - the body of Christ), and we should be controlled by the Holy Spirit living in our hearts. We listen to Him and obey Him, and the result is a church that accomplishes God's will and has the unity that God intends.
In one church we attended at one time (which was spiralling downward for many reasons), the young, inexperienced pastor claimed, "I'm going to make this a music church." Not that there's anything wrong with music, that's so important! But he was putting the emphasis in the wrong place. HIS motives, not God's. Plus, it almost seemed he was putting the music itself in place of God and the Bible. Needless to say, that church actually spiralled down so far and so quickly, the doors were shut.
