UN once again calls for end to United States embargo against Cuba

30 October 2007 – The United Nations General Assembly today once again urged an end to the commercial, economic and financial embargoes imposed on Cuba by the United States for nearly half a century.

For the 16th year in a row, the Assembly adopted a resolution – with an overwhelming 184 votes in favour – reiterating its call to all States to refrain from promulgating and applying laws and measures not conforming with their obligations to reaffirm freedom of trade and navigation.

Four States – Israel, Marshall Islands, Palau, US – voted against the resolution, while the Federated States of Micronesia abstained.

Once again, the UN is trying to butt into our business! I would be that the UN would give Cuba permission to produce nuclear "energy". :rolleyes

We really should end the embargo against Cuba.

1) It is inconsistent. We oppose the oppressive Cuban communist regime with its human rights abuses, but our largest trading partner is the oppressive Chinese communist regime with its worse human rights abuses.

2) It is ineffective. We've been not trading with Cuba for 50 years to try and convince the Cuban people to rise up and overthrow Fidel Castro. The man has lasted through 10 U.S. presidents. Perhaps it's time to rethink our strategy.

3) What better way to open up Cuba to throw off its communist regime than to promote free trade, promote American goods.

I agree with all. We're hypocrites to continue the Cuban embargo while allowing the Chi-coms to provide nearly everything we buy.
