But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron (1 Timothy 4:1-2; NASB).
"Welcome to the website of Salem Avenue Baptist church, located in Rolla, MO. We are glad you have chosen to visit our site, and hope that your time here is enjoyable, and informative. After you have found the specific information for which you are looking, please take some time and browse through our ministries and photo pages; you will find that SABC is a loving, caring, active church, with a number of dynamic ministries all designed to honor Christ, and bring others to know Him as Savior."
While Salem Avenue Baptist Church may be a loving, caring church, browsing Salem Avenue's website could be hazardous to the spiritual health of the unwary believer, because as of this writing, the website contains over 40 references to the Hindu pagan practice of Yoga.
On August 16, 2007, Christian Research Service (CRS) published the article, "Southern Baptist 'Kids' Bowing to Yoga." Among other things, the article pointed out that Salem Avenue had incorporated Yoga into its recreational program. While most of the article exposed the other side of Yoga and the dangers of performing Yoga postures, only a small portion of the article was devoted to Yoga at Salem Avenue Baptist Church. Moreover, the article was based on current, irrefutable documentation found within Salem Avenue's own website.
Most importantly, the article included numerous Scriptural references pertaining to how God views professing believers' participating in a pagan practice. Click here to read the rest of this article.

You know its really sad to see Southern Baptists going down the emerging route. I remember long ago when they used to be.. a true Gospel teaching denomination.
Guess every denom is falling pray now. :ohno

My boss belongs to 1st Baptist in the town where I live.
I heard that she said that their church is teaching a "soul sleep" doctrine now.
I'm not exactly sure what that is, but I have an idea it teaches that the soul sleeps until the body is ressurrected and reunited with the soul.
Is that right?
I don't believe that, myself. Jesus said to the thief on the cross..........."THIS day you shall be with me in paradise."

There are still some Southern Baptist Churches where none of the emergent, Rick Warren (PDL) nonsense is taught or promoted. One of these is where our son pastors, and none of these postmodern, new age ideas will ever find their way into this S. Baptist church as long as he is the pastor. So, we really ought to look at the 'ideas' that are being promoted and evaluate them based on God's Word rather than assuming that Southern Baptist denomination as a whole has 'gone down the tube'; some pastors/churches have indeed gone the wrong direction, but there are still some who are staying the course and are still true, gospel teaching churches.
Also, some folks live in rural sections of our country, and there aren't a lot of churches to select from. Most people who are Baptist don't want to go to a different denomination (Catholic, Methodist), and because there isn't much else around, they will attend the local Baptist church and try to make it better by applying their discernment and gifts that God Himself has given them to use in His Body. :)

You son is to be commended Lynn. You do have a valid point. We need to be careful
Sadly the head of the SBC, Dr Frank Page endorses Willard and other contemplatives, along with Rick Warren. From there the water spills.. many SBC are right in there with this stuff. They also are endorsing The Simple Church.. another spiritual discipline and formation program.
I am thanking the Lord that your son, Lynn, along with a special amount of SBC affil. pastors do not go down this a path.:thumb
Love ya sis! :hug

I mentioned on another thread recently that when my husband and I came to our present church ( he is the associate pastor ) there was a younger woman ( in her 30's) that took over the women's ministry. I was invited to the planning meeting and she shared some of her ideas for the group. She leads exercise classes for a living. One of the first things she said in the meeting was she wanted to start a yoga class. I knew right then that I would not be involved in the women's ministry or be able to follow this gal's leadership. Now, don't get me wrong, she is a sweet young woman, and seems to love the Lord, but she lacked spiritual decernment.
She and several others left the church a short time after she took the position due to a disagreement with the church leadership.
I shared with our pastor's wife ( she is in her 30's ) my concern over yoga, and she was glad that I explained to her the dangers of getting involved with it. It seems on every front Satan is trying to make more in roads into our churches. My husband and I are so burdened to help get our young couples grounded in the Word of God so they will not be mislead.
Oh, by the way, we are Southern Baptist and very conservative on Bible doctrine.

[QUOTE=Preacher's wife;263745]I mentioned on another thread recently that when my husband and I came to our present church ( he is the associate pastor ) there was a younger woman ( in her 30's) that took over the women's ministry. . she wanted to start a yoga class. I knew right then that I would not be involved in the women's ministry or be able to follow this gal's leadership. . . but she lacked spiritual discernment. It never ceases to amaze me how many churches allow young women to lead the women's ministry rather than the older women of the church, based on Titus 2 model. I'm seeing this more and more. Why?
I shared with our pastor's wife ( she is in her 30's ) my concern over yoga, and she was glad that I explained to her the dangers of getting involved with it.
How wonderful that she graciously accepted the truth of what you were saying and did not resist you. What a blessing!

Sing4Me, What is "The Simple Church"? I'm not familiar with that teaching. Seems like there is a fad of the month in a lot of churches.
Lynn and Preacher's Wife, that is such good news. It's so good to see a good solid Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. I admit a few years ago, I could not imagine how the falling-away could happen. I knew it would, but I didn't know how. It's becoming more and more apparent, every day. (I know there will be a "falling away" much worse than it is now, but it looks like it's starting.)

Lynn, I am 57 years old, and I feel blessed that our pastor's wife feels she can use me for a sounding board. We have some good talks about the ministry. One of the reason's my husband accepted the associate pastor's position was to be an encouragment to our pastor and his wife. We were blessed in our first church to have a godly older couple that encouraged us,and they were faithful to the Lord and to the church.
When we came to the church we did not have a women's Sunday School Class. I asked the deacons for approval to start one and they graciously allowed me to lead the class. There is so much facing the younger gals out in the world, and I want to do all I can to strengthen them and their homes.

I think one trap many people fall into is to interpret 1 Timothy 3:6 and assuming someone is emotionally enthusiastic equates to full of Holy Spirit-filled spiritual maturity. (I suspect this is due to unconscious influence of humanistic theology which confuses Holy Spirit illumination with human emotion).
Speaking of US SBC, I don't think it is extremely bad yet. Here in NZ, the Baptist Union is even worse on many areas and these disputes have sadly become rather "mundane" compared with gerater doctrinal problems. (Probably on a par with ABC-USA)
