Hi:
While there are clearly pagen roots to these holidays (Christmas and Easter) - there are pagen roots/similarities to many stories/events in the Hebrew scriptures. (e.g., Rosh Hashannah - the Jewish New Year coincides with the Babylonian New Year and there are pagen stories of the flood)
I think the better way to look at it as Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth (it was celebrated with joy in the gospels) and Easter is the celebration of the resurrection. What satan intended for evil (the pagen predecessor holidays) God has ceased for the good by turning these historical pagen holidays into celebrations of God's glory.
Its another example of tearing down altars to Baal.
A related question is whether we should celebrate, or at least acknowlege (in addition to celebration of Easter), the passover (the Hebrew story of redemption of Israel with the passove sacrifice - more perfectly fufilled by the sacrifice of Jesus) and the feastival of first fruits (the Hebrew feastival that occured on the Sunday of the resurrection which Jesus fulfilled more fully in his "first fruits" of the resurrection).
Blessings,
Brian

I agree. I just wanted to spark some thought and let them search it out for themselves and make their own decision. I for one, get sick at the thought of involving myself with these "elements". I celebrate everyday because I am victorious in Christ. Traditional dates makes no matter to me.

These holidays may have had Pagan roots, but I believe we can still celebrate. With that said, God convicted me years ago about telling my kids there was a Santa, Easter Bunny etc. I couldn't stand the lying, especially when I was questioned if there was really a Jesus! That did it for me. I told them the truth and we now celebrate putting the emphasis on Jesus, being together with family and sharing with others. All three of my children have a relationship with Jesus!

1master, I get what you are saying. The closer I've grown to God in the last few years, the more I am bothered with things like Christmas trees, the Easter bunny and such. I didn't put up a tree this past Christmas for the first time. I've thought about not putting one up before, but I have 4 kids and usually ended up giving in to pressure from society to conform. Personally it's always kind of bothered me, as I couldn't see what it had to do with Christ's birth, but I've always gone along with the crowd till now. It's a big deal to have a tree to most in my family and they don't understand where I'm coming from at all. I'm going to go with my gut feelings from now on though, based mainly on the verse you posted about it being a pagan ritual and my personal questioning of what does it really have to do with celebrating Christ's birth. I've explained it to my kids and they are on board with me now too. The world makes Christmas trees and hunting Easter eggs look so cute and harmless that you're made to feel like a nutjob if you mention you have any concerns about them. I've finally gotten to the point now though, where all I want to do is please my God, and not the world, and deep down that feels good, even if I get reprimanded by the world for it.
