When my daughter was 7 years old, she figured out all by her self that there couldn't really be a Santa Claus. No matter how much anyone tried to explain it to her, she knew that, logistically, it made no sense. She has always been very practical and not very sentimental. Since she was convinced, I told her to keep it to herself. I didn't want her ruining the fun for anyone else or making another kid's parents angry by going about proclaiming that there really was a Santa. However, my sister-in-law seemed to feel that her mission in life was to convince Jen that Santa was real. She kept telling her that if she doesn't believe in Santa, she won't get anything for Christmas. I told my sister-in-law it was useless because Jennifer had made up her mind. And of course Jenneifer would receive Christmas presents along with the rest of teh family. I wasn't going to punish her for having figured out the truth. The only thing my sister-in-law accomplished was to make my daughter angry with her because she wouldn't leave her alone and to make her not trust her. SHe couldn't understand why any adult would insist on perpetuating a myth with her once she was convinced of the truth.

Taking away glory from God and giving it to a make believe person is something horrendous and I am sure will be included in this earth,s judgement.

I heard a woman in a store once telling her son that Jesus brings their presents on Christmas :twitch I believe that she had good intentions, making Jesus the main part of Christmas instead of Santa......but when the kid figures out that Jesus doesn't really bring their gifts, I'd be afraid that they would doubt Jesus all together. :twitch
I'm planning on telling my kids the truth. Mainly because if I lie to them about Santa, how do they know that I'm telling the truth about God and everything else? Plus, I want Jesus to be our reason for celebration.
In the Sunday school class that I teach, most of the kids believe in Santa. I go along with it, because I have no right to tell them the truth about Santa, that's not my job; my job is just to teach them about the gospel. So if a kid's parents are teaching them about Santa, if they bring it up during class, we tell them that Santa is someone who loves God so much that He comes and gives everyone gifts to celebrate the gift that God gave to us (Jesus).

Jesus *is* the Gift of Christmas. :nod

The way I handled it with my kids was to tell them the *historical truth* that Saint Nicholas was a man who, several centuries ago, used to give poor children gifts at Christmas time. He did it in the spirit of Christian charity, since he was a Christian. And so we've adopted his "example" by giving gifts to others at Christmas, and we remember the poor and needy as well.
Saint Nicholas and Jesus' birth can co-exist if you keep it to the historical facts of who "Santa Claus" started out as, and use him as an example of giving to the poor and needy.
