:feaOh, we never celebrate Halloween, but IF I did, I wouldn't have to wear a costume, just go without makeup and knock and I'd scare them pretty good! hee hee :fear

i would also respectfully suggest that those who don't know the background of halloween click on the link provided in post #10 and see how these seemingly innocent customs that we corporately practice on a yearly basis line up with the true spirit of the day as handed down to us through 'tradition'.

We don't "celebrate" halloween either...but I let my kids dress up in there favorite char costume and we go out and get free candy....
My parents let us trick or treat when we were young
we also did santa claus and the tooth fairy...I grew up "normal" and I love Jesus with all my heart.
My husband and I also watch scary movies...go to haunted houses. We are just like that....my kids are usually at home with a sitter already sleeping when we do these type of things.
If you feel convicted...don't do it....
and yes, I know the origins of halloween.....and easter...and christmas...

Please do not take this the wrong way, I am not trying to insult you or hurt your feelings. But do you see nothing wrong with looking up the word celebrate to try and prove that someone is doing something ungodly? That is exactly what a Pharisee would have done in Jesus' day to prove that healing on the Sabbath or eating some grain off the plant is working during the Sabbath.
Look if someone cannot dress their kid as a power ranger, ninja turtle, or whatever and take them to get candy without worshipping satan then yes I would agree that they had better stay home on halloween.
If someone like you is thoroughly convinced that dressing your kid up and getting candy is wrong, then by all means stay home on halloween.
But if someone can with no conviction from the Holy Spirit do said activities than do not call them out on it.
For one it is between them and God. If they disobey the Holy Spirit then they will know it.
Second Halloween only has as much power as you are willing to give it. Meaning just because some druids thought that one particular night has connections to the dark side, and modern wiccans think that this day has particular meaning does not mean that it does. You do not have to be in bondage to their superstitious, false beliefs. Halloween just so happens to occur on a day that God Almighty made, and it is not evil just because some pagan says it is. Satan does not have any super powers on halloween, He is a toothless tiger who was defeated at the Cross. He only has as much power as God lets him have.
In fact I could just as easily decide to lead a Christian movement to take halloween back, just like the early church took pagan festivals and turned them into Christian holidays.

I don't have any kids yet, but we won't be celebrating halloween, but I'll be completely honest, it will be hard not to do it. I remember growing up every year being SO EXCITED the whole day of Halloween until I could go home and get all dressed up and go trick or treating with my dad. It was really the only thing we did together. Sometimes we would go to a local festival that would have a costume contest that I would win sometimes because my mom made some of my outfits from scratch. Nothing was ever "evil" about it, it was actually really fun, and I didn't turn out a bad kid because of it. Actually the opposite, because God saved me out of a family that doesn't know Him (and probably never will.. long story).
But like I said, now that I know, I guess it's not such a good idea...

i posted the definition because of the poster that was suprised that anyone considered observing halloween and its customs akin to "celebrating". to liken that to being like a pharisee is bit of a stretch.

with all due respect, there are many people who are not convicted about things that are CLEARLY sin...so to say that people will automatically be convicted about something that is not NECESSARILY sin (like kids trick or treating on halloween) is not necessarily a true and absolute statement.
i have no problems personally with dressing up and eating candy. i just find it interesting that it is SO important to SO many people to do so on this particular day. to me, this certainly is CELEBRATING, as much as other posters take pains to say they only "do" halloween but do not "celebrate" it. Seems like semantics to me. if someone celebrates it, then so be it...but don't try to skirt around that and make it seem like those who say "celebrate" are bonkers for using that word as if it doesn't make sense or fit, since it does. btw, before i was convicted, i said the same exact thing and used the same exact arguments. so its not like i am pointing any fingers here that weren't eventually pointed back at me when i finally stopped worrying about my own traditions and worrying about what was pleasing to God.

I would disagree, since the bible clearly says that His people are not to be like them (which is why i pointed to the article since it was concise and had the scriptures cited). I am not in bondage to their superstitions...and I doubt God is, either...but He did not want His people looking or acting like pagans in the OT, i doubt He does now.

that's interesting. my bible says that satan is a roaring lion roaming about the earth seeking whom he will destroy. quite the opposite of a toothless tiger.

wonderful. though i am not sure what you could tie it to...christmas=jesus' birth, easter=jesus' death....halloween=??
frankly i'd have preferred to stick to the OT feasts than run around looking like those things that God warned the Israelites to stay away from....and yes, that includes christmas and easter, which are so convoluted its not funny...in fact it is disgusting. mass consumerism and greed at its best.

fwiw, i (and nobody else that i know of) never said or implied or even thought that celebrating halloween made people evil or abnormal.-----> :hehee
i celebrated halloween until six years ago. that's thirty years worth of halloweens. i am sure i'm no more (or less) warped than any other person here (lol).
for me, and for others who abstain, it boils down to the question 'does it honor God?' ...we came to the conclusion that it did not- (and for many, i know for ME) it was a very difficult conclusion to come to.
its really regrettable that so many would read that last sentence and automatically cry 'judgement' or 'pharisee' and become angry.
