Why not touch the oil and wine?
I'm asking this to see what others have been taught about this scripture. Hope some will reply to this..
If this is not in the appropriate thread, mods could you move it to the right one. Thanks!!!

This is what I learned in one study. Oil and wine were luxuries enjoyed only by the rich during NT times. Any time there is famine, conflict, slaughter and bloodshed the common people are always the first to suffer. This is what will happen during the tribulation. The teacher used the adage "The rich get richer, and the por get poorer." He indicated that in this prophecy the gap between the rich and the poor will be very great, no middle class, only the very rich and the very poor - those people who are able to buy food and those who are not.

Wow, you just brought a rememberance to me. I remember growing up in the AOG church(being little and running on the pulpit/stage or around it)
Never to touch the oil. No, no. Now you know it was only used on Sunday nights for alter calls. heh. But really, interesting as I would have never thought about it and even don't know the answer to it!

Oil, what you use for cooking and as an additive in breads etc...
Wine, what is used in cooking, and drinking as water was not always available, but grapes were.
However, I think that it has Spiritual application as well. Oil and Wine are major impliments needed for certain offerings

I wonder if it might not be just opposite of this.
In context "hurting" the oil and wine would refer to "making it expensive".
I would think this means that while food is expensive, perhaps oil and wine are easily obtainable.

Because the main course is coming so fast, no one will have time to eat the salad...

I've been told (and had it confirmed by a friend of mine who is a native Israeli) that olives and grapes are two of the few crops that aren't pollinated by bees. So if the whole CCD crisis causes a global famine, oil and wine would not be affected.
If all of this is true, then I think you are quite correct. Oil and wine are easily obtainable.
