We have been lucky actually.. England has been paying over $5.00 for several years... Canada .. with the converting liters to gallons.. have been paying over $4.00... for several years according to sources up there. Soon a 13 gallon tank will cost the consumer minimum $130.. at the rate the economy is going.

The reason for higher gas prices out of U.S. is because of heavy taxation I believe. Not actual price of gas. So that defense doesn't really fly here. This is just what I've heard & haven't found any info. to state otherwise.

To be fair, the area they are referring to is near Big Sur which is on a 2 lane section of the 1 coast freeway. There is not another gas station for miles and miles so that station has always been known for super high prices. It is a small but popular tourist destination and they are at all times at least a dollar more per gallon than anywhere else. It is pretty telling that they mentioned Santa Cruz, because they and a town called Half Moon Bay have really high prices and right now are nowhere near $5. :idunno It may get there but this article is sensationalizing.

You are exactly right; the taxes are why the European gas is so high, so that's not a relevant comparison other than the amount at the pump.

Let me get this straight. Europe is paying double what we've been paying because the European governments have been implementing high taxes on fuel. Yet you claim that the American government is implementing a high tax despite the fact that it's only a fraction of the European government's tax.

Also, how much tax has been added to the price of gas over the past 3 years?

Let's face it, the price of gas is increasing, not because the government is increasing taxes, but based on the simple laws of economics: supply and demand.

And I thought paying $3.14 a gallon here in Indy today was bad.

????? Huh? Nobody here made a claim that the American Govt. is implementing a high tax. We only were saying that the reason Europe's gas is so high is because Europe has high taxes on fuel. What are you talking about????? What did I miss?

So, has the American government implemented a high tax or not?
