View Full Version : Do you use a reward system to encourage learning?

We sometimes reward our children with a reward which could be anything from a special dinner out with either me or daddy, to candy, to a new toy, to an extra hour/two up past bedtime on the week-end, to sometimes $0.25-$1.00 it just depends. Sometimes it helps when we're in a difficult period in our studies.
I just wondered if anyone else did this and if so what kind of rewards do you offer?

My ds has always had a struggle with reading so I pay him $1 for every book he reads outside of his schoolwork. He has saved up alot of money this way. :nod

Yes, when we started to hs our youngest daughter last year, I used play money.
She earned money for staying on track (she's ADD), bible verses, and good papers. She would also loose money too.
At the end of the week we would add up how much she earned and she would have to pay herself from the play money. Then we would subtract $ lost. Then she would buy things from the toy/candy store here. I would go to the dollar store and buy small items. She learned to count money and count change back (that was awesome).
This year I am also hs her older sister too, so now we have sticker charts and they earn items from our toy store.
I would buy:
Candy
small toys,
puzzels,
books,
pencils, pens, school stuff.
stickers
Hope this answers your question
P.S. I got your pm, I tried to reply earlier but my son was playing the drums and I had to go outside. I love kids.

That's ok. I love kids too. My older son Matt is learning to play the electric guitar vis help from his dad and elmore music that sends us instruction and music sheets via email and sometimes I go outside too, I haven't told dh yet but Matt can play so much better than him.....I have no musical talent other than Clarinet (4 years band) and Keyboard (learned on my own) and Choir(4 years). I don't know if I could take the drums.
Feel free to write me anytime. Here or in my private email, I think I sent it to you if not remind me and I will.
Love you sister in Christ,

I use the pizza hut reading coupons as an award. I don't use them just for reading, but also if they do really well on day or ace a test. I also hit the $ spot and get a few goodies like puzzles or coloring books. They really like that

I have a little chart that I use with my 9 year old daughter. Every week she passes her spelling test AND gets a B or better on each of her subjects, she will earn a star or smiley sticker on her chart. When the chart gets full of stickers she will get $20. That amount of money, to my daughter, is like being rich and she gets so excited. :)

That's a wonderful idea, using a chart for them to see thier goals. I have made charts for their lessons scedules and days along with a chart for their chores, but I haven't made a sticker chart yet.
I think I am going to do that one for my daughter too. She really likes stickers too so that could work really well.
My dh took her out to eat at Ryans tonight, just him and her for all the wonderful work she has done. She is averaging 92-100 in all her classes and she is only in the 1st grade--doing so well. She really gets into the homeschooling big time.
Our older son Matt has also earned his dinner out with daddy which will be this week-end as he has worked the past 2 weeks on bringing his grades up and he did it. He also he got an 100 on his Bible examine which wasn't an easy test as it was on John the Baptist and the questions were really kinda hard if you only had read it once, so we know he picked his Bible up and read it more than once and his grades proved it. My dh was so proud of him and our daughter.
Now if I could only munster the determination and effort to do well in schooling out of the other 2 kids of mine that would be a treat. Their grades fluctuate. That's why I asked about the rewards to see if there was anything else I could offer or hadn't thought of.
yours in Christ,
