Imo opinion it is a combination of things. 1 The big banks admitted to some pretty heavy loses last week, and as of the 15th they will have to put more loses on the books, as the law changes for what can be put on "off balance " sheets. Enron anyone? 2 The dollar has been crashing, mainly because of the rate cuts. Which causes a whole host of problems one being inflation here and another it makes our currency not the best palce to put your money if your say China. 3 The Fed has done about all it can to allivate the credit crisis for the BANKS and it hasnt hepled much. Confidence in the banks and the supposed savy money managers they had has been destroyed, plus nobody seems to be buying the banks statements ie they think they are lying about the extent of their loses. 4 Cracks in the consumers decade and a half spending spree are beginning to appear, It appears that the turnip of easy credit has been squeezed dry.
All of this has investors in Asia just a tad nervous. More bad news is on the way and people are heading for the exists.
Warning I am not a financial advisor nor did I sleep at a Holiday Express :shocked

Keylan, I agree with all that. I'm thinking that number 3 on your list carries significant weight right now.

Wall Street, Bracing for More Bad News From Banks, Also Awaits Retail Sales, Price Indexes
NEW YORK (AP) -- The stock market this week is hoping for signs that the economy is surviving the problems in the financial sector -- and that the Federal Reserve will come to the rescue if it's not.
Investors are slowly getting a clearer picture of how much in risky and deteriorating debt securities the world's major financial institutions are holding, and they don't like what they see. more: http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/071111/wall_street_week_ahead.html
In the above excerpt, I underlined a phrase that caugt my attention. Sigh ... it's this very "rescue" effort that got the nation in the mess it's in. Why would more of what caused a problem, fix the problem? These people are about as short sighted as you can get.

Issachar, # 3 is the scary one. If things arew as bad with the banks as some suspect. We might be seeing the birth pangs of the destruction of the world economy. Just what John forsaw, the set up ofro the emergance of a world economy with hyperinlation. Hear those hoof beats louder everyday.
Princess, the number is big, but the % is worse
