View Full Version : When you opt out of getting email - And they still send it.

I don't know how many emails that I have clicked on at the bottom where the link is they offer to remove your email from their mailing list, but apparently it doesn't work, as they continue to still emails, so of which are not for me and very questionable. Sometimes it's solicitaiton for surveys promising money, yet you have to sign up for offers, sometimes it's for dating services and I am a married woman, sometimes it's for gambling, sometimes it's for some person offering a huge vast amount of money to me from Africa or elsewhere and I know it's a scam...
Help how can I or is there an online company that can help me stop this? What can I do?

Unfortunately there is not much you can do to stop them from being sent. I think sometimes opt out means something other than what I think such as I'm a real email address send me more and they do.:scratch

never ever ever ever click on the link to "Opt Out" from spam email.
legitimate mail lists are OK to "Opt out" of by clicking on the link.
But those that are spam, only send a response that your email is "live" and "read".
Then your name is added with thousands of others who "clicked on the "Opt out" link to email lists and sold to other spammers and email marketers.
Best thing to do is delete them and move on.
I deal with large corporate mail systems and use Symantec Brightmail in addition to other layered approaches to fighting spam, but I do not know of end user products that are effective, although I have tested many a few years back. Most of them were as much time consuming as just dealing with the spam, so it was a wash.
Hope that helps.

That's spam for ya. you just need to make sure the kids are away then demonstrate the power of the delete button.
As far as programs go, Cactus Spam Filter (http://www.download.com/Cactus-Spam-Filter/3000-2382_4-10545523.html?tag=lst-6) got very high reviews on C-Net.

I get advertisements for Viagra and I'm a single woman.
Now how the heck did that get started to me? I can't figure out how to get it stopped.

I have started getting those too on my work computer and I can't get them to go away. I right clicked and add to blocked senders but they kept coming, and I couldn't add to postini because there is no domain name like .net or .com. The sender just shows as something like "Viagra @ 70% off" so I have no clue how to get rid of these pesky e-mails.
What I did do which helps me not have to see them at least is created a rule under Options so that any e-mails with Viagra in it will go directly to my junk folder.
There has to be a way to delete them permanently but I don't know what it is and I don't really want to call the Help Desk on this one. :ohno

Aggravating and disgusting isn't it?
If you figure anything out, please post it. And I will do the same for you.

What I normally do is figure out the IP address of the source of the emails. Once I do that, I find out who owns that server, then I send them an email.

When you find out who owns the server for the IP address, what e-mail do you send them? The junk they sent you? Or, do you send them e-mail explaining you don't want to receive anymore?
I never even thought about doing that........:doh

Can you give instructions on how to do this?
I tried sending an email to the pharmacy out of Canada and stating my complaint.
Come to think of it I haven't gotten any emails in a few days about Viagra.
