I have been unable to sleep a full night for the last few months. I’m usually wide awake after 4 hours of sleep, (tonight 3 hours-and that’s after getting only 4 hours the night before).
I’ve read and heard the older we get the less sleep we get, but I thought that didn’t happen until our 70’s. As time has speeded up, maybe it is apropos that I’m being hit with this at age 49:idunno.
I am either “peri” or post menopausal (I’ve been waiting 2 years now to see:lol2), but I do have the hot flashes, although hot flashes are not waking me up. Could this have something to do with it?
I am also ADHD. Though this has never been a factor in the past, maybe it is as I age:scratch.
I'm grateful for the 3-4 hours I'm getting, but 5-6 would be Oh so glorious!
Is anyone else going through this?

Yes it started about age 60 for me. Taking some natural hormone has helped. PM me if you want to know more about what I'm taking.

Sophie, I'm 59 and I can sleep now. I had problems with sleep when I was going through the change. Once I finished, I was able to sleep. Although now I do get up early some days but when I work hard I sleep now.
But I do remember so well how I lost sleep when in peri-menopause. Your hormones are changing this is why.
Also, if you are 60 and cannot sleep, there may be many reasons. Could be health reasons, etc. But if it isn't health reasons...then it may be that you are not active enough during the day. I find that when I work hard all day and then drive home .......I find that at night I'm so worn out I barely eat dinner and then I'm out and I sleep all night. But today I awoke at 5:30 but again, I fell asleep last night around 9:30.
I definitely think it may be a hormonal thing that you're experiencing and it will pass. Ask your doctor if there are natural remedies you can take to help you sleep during this time. :):hug:hug

I'm 54 and I don't sleep well. I sleep maybe 2 or 3 hours sometimes and will wake up.
I'm in one of those in between naps right now, and I'm in here on the computer.
I don't feel like I've had enough sleep tho, and I will lay back down in a little bit, because I have to go to work this afternoon and work until midnight. So I need more sleep.
I just have to get it in 2-3 hour naps until I get enough.
I know I'm going thru the change.
I even took 2 benadryls when I went to bed hoping that would help but it doesn't help much.
I took Excedrin PM's for awhile and they will knock me out, but I STILL wake up after 2 or 3 hours. It doesn't matter WHAT I take, I will still wake up.
And for some reason the Excedrin PM's make me feel funny, so I don't take those anymore, I prefer the plain benadryls, but they didn't even help much this time.
I think this is something I"m going to have to put up with for awhile until it stops.

Excedrin has caffiene in it even the PM stuff. Did you know this? Excedrin is the only thing that works for me when I get headaches but they make me super hyper! If they are not helping you sleep, it may be because of the caffiene. When you are full menopausal (meaning you're all done for one full year) you will feel better. Make sure to take a good multi-vitamin, you're body is in stress during perimenopause and the vitamins replenish your body from the stress. Ask your doctor about the benadryl.......benadryl tends to dry you out because it's mostly for allergies. Did you know this? This will add to your feelings of being tired and weak and fatigued. Dehydration always makes you feel tired and weak. You got to rehydrate your body, drink water and talk to your doctor about this. You are working and you really need your sleep. :) :hug

Yes, I know
Excedrin has caffeine in it and I know Benadryl is for allergies.
I have allergies, too.
And menopause is lasting over a year for me.....it's already been over a year.
Everyone is different.
Excedrin helped me sleep before menopause started, nothing much helps now.

54 and not sleeping either, I get so tired so early and fall asleep on the couch, then I get to bed and sleep for 2 hours ........ always 2 hours, then I am up again, I lay there and try to get back to sleep and sometimtes it works and sometimes I am just up for hours. Then I am worthless all day since I am wiped out, This will go on for either a few days or a couple of weeks then I hit a stretch of sleeping pretty good. Ambien is great ! But it is so expensive!! And I get only 15 tablets per perscription since they are habit forming so I only take one when I have been up for days. Dr says it is all hormonal and normal for this age and will pass. I hope there is sleep in Heaven! At least long wonderfull uninterupted NAPS !!!

Well um i'm 35 and have this problem of lack of sleeping/insomnia off and on every month or so for the last few years.... :idunno
I would try a Tylenol PM to kick in sleep.... That's what i do; too many sleepless, grouchy nights, i don't leave it up to mother nature to get my zzzz's if i'm having a terrible time.. It throws everything off when this happens.. Don't know if that is helpful; but i do know the bottle says they are not addictive.. :idunno I feel for you; i hate not getting my sleep...
