Food prices are accelerating at their highest rate for 14 years - and running at more than three times the rate of inflation, official figures show.

Have your say: Why do you think food prices are so high?
Increasing wheat and dairy prices mean food factories are having to pay 6.6 per cent more for their raw ingredients than a year ago - the highest annual rise since 1993, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The idiotic ethanol push is playing a role. Corn prices are up and there is corn syrup in a lot of food and corn is a primary feed for livestock. Dairy prices are up radically.

Then there's the fuel costs.

It is bad :fear
I try to just get the basics when I go, and I still find myself spending 75-100 weekly :shocked and that isn't even including meats :doh We have a deepfreeze that is only half full this year. We do have 1 buck in it. Still have 3 doe tags, but I fear by the time this ice storm stops the tags will have expired :rant

It is only going to get worse....I have to laugh, (due to the ridiculous reason they blamed the rise in the cost of everything) because when the gas prices shot up over 3.00 everyone blamed the rising prices on gas- from the utility comps to the grocers, but when the prices went back down again to like 1.69 the utility comps and the grocers left the prices inflated. Guess they have to blame it on something.....

Stock up when you can and clip those coupons......every little bit helps :nod

I've never paid $2 for a dozen eggs. Used to be that bacon or sausage, eggs were a cheap supper.

Not any more !!

Corn-based Ethanol is more of a problem than a solution.

I agree with many of the other posters. I find myself spending at least 50-70$ per week on just the basics. My husband is in the military so I do most of my shopping at the base commissary and even their prices are going through the roof. I can't even imagine having to shop for grocery at the local food stores.:ohno:ohno

It'll only get worse from here...

Here in Washington State we lost 700 to 1000 dairy cows last week in our floods. The price of anything that comes from cows milk will soon be astronamical! Once the price goes up, and people buy anyway, you know they won't reduce the prices.

You think it's bad now ...

Revelation 6:6 - "And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine."

Is this the verse that means a whole day's wages for a dab of food?

Just remember: A legume plus a grain makes a whole protein. Raw beans have gone up like everything else, but are still economical and filling. We've been eating alot of those lately. God will provide, as long as we're not asking for steak every night. :hug
