In a nutshell, the main difference, from a gospel perspective, is that the Catholic Church does not believe or teach that salvation comes through faith in Christ alone. The Catholic Church does not believe that we are justified before God by the atoning blood of Christ alone. There is a basic misunderstanding of the significance of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, in that they miss that it is a finished work.

There are many other issues with the Catholic Church, but from my perspective, this is the critical error that leads to all the others. Without the biblical gospel, there is no born again experience. Without the indwelt spirit, there is no true understanding of the nature of God, the Truth of the Word and the Power of the Living God in living a righteous life.

Just like all other religions created by man, the Catholic Church creates their own activities to try and fill the gap.

The confusing part is that the Catholic Church uses the language of the bible, and it sounds similar, but if one takes the time to peak under the covers they will understand that it is far from a saving gospel. It gives false hope.

Having spent 50 years with the religion of the Catholic Church and then having a born again experience in Jesus, I cringe when protestants and others proclaim Catholics to be brothers and sisters in Christ. I put the Catholic Church in the same category as Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons. They know the story, they have the scripture, but they elevatae their tradition over the revelation of God. There is no salvation because they do not hold to the Jesus of the bible, and to the uniqueness and significance and glory of the work of Christ on our behalf. I know that's not politically correct, but its the truth.
