Does anyone here buy stuff in bulk or stock up. I am getting tired of shopping once a week and I would love to start stocking up on some things.

Got any tips?

Yeah, I do. Still doesn't change the fact that I have to go every week. If nothing else, milk and fresh produce require a weekly trip. Plus, with six in our family, plus six cats, we're always out of something, no matter how much I try to stock up. :idunno I just got home an hour ago from Wal-Mart and have called DH and asked him to stop at Target and get the 10 things I either couldn't find or forgot at WM. I just can't win when it comes to grocery shopping.

Our family buys in bulk however, like Chayilwoman posted, I still have to go to the store weekly to buy milk and fresh produce. Although, lately, I've been going to the Farmers Market downtown Dallas to get our produce. Much nicer and really fresh.

I always buy up in bulk to keep my pantry stocked. This way if we have no money for groceries, we have something to pull from.

Publix is less than 1/2 mile from my house. When they have the buy one get one free, I will go several times during the week with either my MIL or DH to stock up on the items that we use all the time. (MrP has so few items that he can eat or drink due to his allergies that when they have coffee on special, I usually go and get my stock back up to about 14 or 18 bags ...........this will last until the next time coffee goes on sale at Publix.) I will use my coupons on the coffee if I have some and that even helps with further savings.

When I go to the Asian market to get my specialty flours or grains, I stock up and buy about 20 pounds of this and that at a time. Then I do not have to make the trip downtown (30 miles round trip) This saves on gas. I also buy things in bulk at Sam's when I go to the Asian store so that I do not have to use the gas again to go to the big city.

Another thing we do to help save is I try to tie my shopping trips in with my DD or my MIL going in that direction. we do all of the errands at that time.

If you go through your grocery ads, you can take them with you and price match the staple or meat items at WalMart. (you can't do % off sales or buy one get one free there, but if a store has their STORE BRAND label item for a good price, you can price match that one with the GREAT VALUE store brand) This helps to cut down on running all over town and it saves further on your budget.

My tip for saving at WalMart for groceries:

Sit down and lay out all of the grocer ads. See who has the item you want on sale for the cheapest price. Ex: yellow squash.........Winn Dixie .99 a pound.

On your Grocery list, have the items you want listed by the stores: Under the Winn Dixie name write Yellow Squash .99 a pound.

Circle the price on the ad page with a bold marker. TAKE THE AD WITH YOU.

do this for all items you want under each heading so that when you price match at the register, you know which ad and if the cashier wants to see the ad, you know which one to hand her and it is circled to speed the process up.

I sometimes will even shop with 2 buggies if I have a lot of price matched items. I put non price matched items in one cart and price matched items in the other cart. This way, nothing slips by the price matched section. (I hold the price matched items for last so that I can really pay attention to each item as it comes to be rung up.

ALSO, if you have a lot of coupons to use. You could take a bit of scotch tape with you and tape the coupon to the item. This way the cashier sees that you actually bought the item and she can just take the tidbit of tape and put it down so they don't all stick together.

It takes a little longer to do this game plan before you hit the store, but it saves you lots of time in the store later in the week.

This is exactly what I do! Walmart is always good about price-matching. Depending on the cashier you get some ask to see the ad others don't but I'm always prepared, just in case. :)

What I do is make out a menu for a whole month and go major shopping once a month. I did this because I always bought too much food because I didn't have a plan plus I would spend each night wondering what to make. Now I just look at the menu and make that.

I still have to run to the store at least once a week, but it is just to replenish the milk and bread and fresh fruit.
